⚠️There's smoking of the devils lettuce in this and talk of a school shooting.⚠️

Case Name - Dress Me In Your Gaze Tonight

The end of summer was upon us. What with August already here and September well on its way. That also meant we were a week away from starting our senior year. I'd like to say that a year after the shooting incident everyone was excited to go back. Yet that wasn't the case. No one wanted to back to school but it was inevitable.

I asked my mother if I could home school. But with her being a single parent who took care of three kids, me included, she didn't have the time. Which meant I was stuck going back when summer vacation was over.

"Sweetie, I know you don't want to go back. But I just don't have the time." My mother had said as she left my room after handing me a basket of clothes to put away. "It's your last year and I want to see you walk at graduation. The kids last year didn't get that."

She was right. After the incident, the seniors from last year didn't get to walk. They just had their diploma's sent to them in the mail. It was really shitty. My mother has this need for all of her kids to do the things she didn't get to do. And since she dropped out in the 9th grade and I'm her first born, I'll graduate first. So this is just as special to her as it was to me.

After putting my clothes away, I plopped myself in a chair I had in the corner of my room. My bedroom door opens and I look up to see my younger sister standing there. I raise a brow at her silence.

"Can you take me to Amelia's? Mom said to ask you."

I think about it for a moment. I really had nothing else to do and sitting inside all day just wasn't where it was at for me. I was itching to go out. My hands press onto the arm rests as I push up and stand.

"Sure."

I walk over to my desk, my sister leaving my doorway with a quiet 'yes'. I snag my keys and phone then slip on my sneakers before heading out after her. I shut my door behind me and make my way through the hallway and then down the steps to get to the main floor.

"What about Cory?" I ask my mom once I step into the kitchen. Where she was at the counter chopping vegetables.

"He's taking a nap. I already called Amelia's mother, she said it was okay that Sara came over."

I step up next to her and steal a piece of carrot before popping it into my mouth.

"Alright. I think I'm gonna hit the park after I drop her off. I'm getting bored."

My mother places the knife down and wipes her hands on her apron. I lean against the counter and watch as she walks over to her purse that sat on the island behind her.

"Here. Put some gas in while you're out."

"Mom, I get paid in a few days. I don't need that if it's all you got."

My mother shoved the money into my hand when she came back. "Shut up and go."

I knew what she was doing. She hates it when she upsets me, even if I wouldn't say anything about it, so she was offering me to go do something other than going to the park. If the two 20s in my hand was anything to go by.

"Dinner will be ready by 7. Just be back by then."

I huff but nod, knowing she wouldn't take the money back even if I tried giving it to her.

"Alright."

"I'm ready!"

My mom and I turn to see my sister standing in the kitchen archway with her drawstring bag on her back. I stay where I was as my mom walks to my sister and gives her a hug.
