"Did you notice anything strange about Phoebe last night?" I asked Lawrence. It was past five in the morning and we were at the gym, we woke up early to exercise before we started our day. Becky was meant to meet me here so we could both train.
"The new girl?" He asked running on the treadmill, drenched in sweat.
"Yes," I answered breathily, I was on my back and lifting weights.
"She seemed... odd. There's something off about her, but maybe it's because she was nervous about all the new faces." He increased the speed and began running faster.
She was odd but that was not all, she was also inhumanly gorgeous and I was not the only one that thought that way. Although we had a match today, Phoebe was the main topic in the boys' dorm last night, the boys stayed up late in the corridors talking about her and how they planned to approach her. I was in my room but could hear every word as they had no issues arguing about who they thought she would accept first.
But while I stayed back in my room and took no part in their conversation, I wasn't immune to what they saw that drove all of them so crazy in just one night, if anything, I was probably crazier, how else could I explain how I didn't sleep a bit last night but stayed up picturing her face over and over again? How could I not be crazy when my curiosity about this girl tripled when I finally found her in the dining last night and time froze?
I was awestruck, blinded by perfection, I had locked eyes with a celestial being. There was however something else that lingered on my mind all night long, something about her that felt enchanting and at the same time... Empty. And if I was curious about this girl before, I had to confess that I was obsessed now.
"Today's game would be wild, the Lions' better watch their back, " Lawrence said, "I didn't see Kevin throughout yesterday, I wonder what he is up to?"
"He is probably staying out of our way, he knows better than to provoke us," I answered.
Lawrence nodded in agreement.
"He even missed economics class yesterday, all to avoid us, seems like he's finally learning something."
Kevin was the only student who wasn't a prefect but could get away with missing classes, and he missed a lot of classes, especially joined classes that would require him to be in the same room with me. It took him some time to learn, but he did learn to stay as far away from me as possible.
"Morning, boys," Becky said entering the gym.
"Morning, Beck," I answered, while Lawrence murmured something back in response that sounded like Good Morning. I put down the weight and sat up.
Seeing that I had dropped the weights, Becky came closer.
"Did you have a good night?" She placed her hands on my shoulders, massaging them gently.
"We were meant to be here by five and it's five-thirty now, we should start training." I stood up and walked out of the gym. I didn't wait to see if she was following, but I could tell she was right behind me.
I walked fast, distancing myself from her, not slowing down to talk or wait for her. We were headed to the field, where we would train together, it was something we started last term since we were both picked as the athletes that would represent the school in the forthcoming competition.
"Will you hurry!" Becky yelled at a junior student running breathlessly towards us. "Give me that," Becky snatched a water bottle from the girl's hand when she got to her, "You were meant to be here before me and look at when you are coming." She scolded the girl.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but I was ironing the clothes you gave to me last night." The girl said frightfully.
"Good morning Your Highness." She quickly added when she saw me, bowing down as deeply as she could, her whole body shaking.
