C H A P T E R 31 : The Rain
-----Jaemin-----
It started to thunder 30 minutes after Mark-Hyung and Donghyuck came into the room I was staying in the hospital. It was funny since just ten minutes before, there had been no signs of rain. The sky had been clear and bright blue. It was as if the world saw our bad fortune and called for something to further emphasize that. Usually, rain put me in a good mood. It didn't today. There was a feeling in the pit of my stomach saying that the rain came with bad news.
"How's your head, baby?" The eldest ask, caressing the wound, successfully diverting my head from looking at the room's window.
I smile at him gently. "I already said I'm fine, Hyung. Really, don't worry too much about me." He opens his mouth, ready to interject, but I speak before he gets the chance. "Besides, this is technically my fault. I was the one that got distracted and wasn't ready for the impact."
"You shouldn't have had to worry about that in the first place," he retorts, frowning.
"You shouldn't have had to either," I reply, my eyes tracing each one of the scratches on his face. One on his bottom lip on the right side, one on his left cheek, and one right above his left eyebrow. There were some on his forearms too since he covered his face with them. "This whole thing is messed up, but none of it was our fault. It was because of whoever that driver was, no one else." I told him this with seriousness.
He kept on blaming himself for this, I wondered why, but also I didn't know what he felt like. What it had felt like to be behind the wheel. I guessed it was responsibility, a burden he always felt. I knew he did. He felt like he was in charge of the three of us, as the oldest. Sometimes, I wanted to tell him that we could take care of ourselves and that we could take care of him too but I also knew that he liked thinking he was the one that had to take care of us, he liked being that for us. That's why he would be perfect as a doctor.
"Hyung," I call out, breaking the momentary silence we were enveloped in. He hums in question. "Why did you decide to become a doctor? I mean, out of everything, why a doctor?"
He hums for a second, thinking, looking at the ceiling as if the answer was there. "I guess I have always liked that people rely on me, that must be why. I also like pressure and being a doctor is difficult," he smiles.
In my mind, I say, 'bingo,' having guessed the reason why.
I nod at him, smiling widely when the door opens and Donghyuck comes in, my smile instantly widening impossibly more.
"Hey!" I exclaim and he laughs at me, why? I wouldn't know.
"I brought you guys some snacks and I ran into your mom and Jaehyun-Hyung, they said that they're keeping you overnight just to make sure that your concussion is only mild. They say that you should be recovered within 7 days. They're going home to get you some clothes and then they should be back," he explains, setting down the snacks that he has bought. "Here, I did research and you shouldn't be eating processed food, so I brought you some fruit," he tells me, handing me a bowl with cut-up fruit; apples, strawberries, grapes, melon, etc.
"Seriously? You bring all those snacks, including my favorite! and don't allow me to have any?!" I shake my head, frowning. "Shame on you, shame on you." Despite my complaints, I take off the lid of the container and pick up a piece of red apple.
