Will picks me up and runs next door where I reach out and twist the handle. It's unlocked and we head inside. Will sets me on the ground and I hop on one foot around the room.
It's clean but empty and there's nobody there. The room is cool with faint buzzing sounds from machines and trinkets neatly scattered around.
"We probably just missed him. If we go now we might be able to catch him before the takeoff." I add, out of air from hopping.
I hop over to his desk and sit down in the chair to rest my foot. There's a photo on the desk with a crack in the glass. A woman whose face I barely remember, Will and me.
"Look, it's Mom!"
I pick up the picture and show it to Will. He holds it and smiles.
"I remember that. It was Mom's Mother's Day gift. You only stopped crying for the picture."
I laugh.
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Come on, we're going to be late."
He nods and grabs my arms and my shoulder and we run as fast as we can down the hall and through the laboratory. Will leads me through the room to a few doors at the end of the wall.
"I remember coming here when I was a kid. There should be a shortcut across the building right through here."
He points to another door and I open it. The lights are flickering on and off due to a faulty wire.
I hear a clattering from behind us.
"Hey, aren't those James' kids? I thought they were confined to their room."
"Crap."
Will mutters under his breath.
"Will, get in there! Hurry!"
We both dash into the dark hallway. Will locks the door and barricades it.
"They locked it! Somebody get the key!"
Someone yells from outside.
"Come on, Will, it won't hold for long. Let's just keep moving."
We make our way through the dark, bumping into things and stumbling around. I clear away some cobwebs from around my face and Will leads the way in front of me. It seems like it used to be an old storage closet but it's also a hallway that goes all the way to the other side of the building.
A thin ray of light emits from a small crack in the ceiling and Will topples over with a crash. I hear some fumbling but I still can barely see Will's fallen figure struggling to get up off the floor.
"Sorry, I tripped on something. Are these-"
"Hey, Will, don't get distracted. We've got a rocket to stop."
"Wait, I think these are the blueprints for the rocket!"
Will picks up a few papers off the floor and holds them up to the beam of light.
"I may not be a genius like Dad, but I'm pretty sure that's the launcher and- There! That's where he should be for the takeoff, and... I think this is like an emergency shutdown mechanism. There's a code but it's not on this paper. It's gotta be here somewhere.."
We both get on the ground and start looking around for the code.
"There are so many papers in here how are we supposed to find that specific one?"
"I don't know but maybe if we just keep looking we can find it."
"Keep looking? We don't have time to keep looking! We need to stop Dad!"
"Wait, Apollo!"
I take some more steps forward and crash into something tall. I brush my hands across the surface and my hand reaches a wall on both sides.
"Will, it's a dead end, I thought this was a shortcut!"
Will doesn't answer and I hear him swallow.
"This isn't a shortcut, is it?"
I ask, sighing and dropping back on the floor in the dark.
"It's- I mean, I- I'm sorry but I can explain!"
"Why would you lead us here if you knew it was a dead end? The rocket is going to take off soon and now that we've wasted time in this closet there's no way we'll be able to stop him, it's too late!"
"Apollo I'm so sorry but I just didn't want you to get hurt. I knew that we wouldn't be able to stop him no matter what! I mean even if we did get there in time they can't change anything! I thought if you didn't know that, it would've made it... Easier."
"What? No! No, Will, it's not- I can't- I don't want him to go..."
My words drift into a quiet sob and I hug Will again.
"I know, me either."
The noises from outside stop and the doorhandle shakes, echoing down the long closet to me and Will.
"They caught us. What should we do now?"
We both look up as the light floods in from behind the door and a small figure comes into sight. Will and I both gasp at the same time.
"BINGO??"
