My eyes flutter open, the dim light is blinding. The air is cold, but I feel warm under a soft blanket. I suddenly remember the forest and the... What was it?
I sit up in a panic, realising I'd been caught, by whatever it was. I'm lying on the floor, with a pillow and blanket covering me. There's a fire near me, lighting up the room and keeping me warm.
Something touches my arm, and I pull it away quickly. An orange and black cat sits snugly by my side.
I feel my chest rising up and down as my heart beats. I can breathe. I take a deep breath, gathering the air in my lungs.
"You're awake!"
A voice across the room startles me. A boy probably more than ten years older than me is sitting in a chair I somehow didn't notice before.
"Who are you?"
I ask, my voice is shaky. I swallow, trying to cover up my fear.
"I'm Will!"
He says with a smile.
"It's a bit cold, isn't it? The fire should help. Is there anything else I can do for you?"
I shake my head, confused. If this is who the one in the note warned me about, I'm not sure who to trust. He seems nice.
No matter what they say or how convincing they are, they don't want to help you.
A voice echoes in my head.
"Apollo?" Will says, with his still goofy smile.
Don't listen. Shut them out.
"You know my name?"
"Oh, yeah. Don't worry about it. Sorry about the cat, he comes here sometimes."
"Don't worry..?"
"Yeah. I meant to ask you if I could borrow something,"
Nothing makes sense. I want to trust him, but there's something off.
"Sure, but I don't have much with me, I-"
"No, no, I just need those boots. They're really important to me and-"
"Boots? What boots?"
I look down at my feet where I notice a pair of dirty white boots. I don't remember wearing them before.
"Oh, yeah, these aren't even-"
Whatever you do, don't trust anyone or give anyone anything that's yours.
"Actually, I need them. Sorry."
I scratch my head and stand on the cold floor. I wipe my hands on the side of my shirt and walk closer to him.
"Do you mind showing me the way out?"
He nods and growls under his breath, pointing to a door on my left.
"It's over there."
"Thank you."
I reach towards the door with shaky hands. My head hurts and I feel dizzy.
"But I helped you!"
I turn and see his face, half covered by his hand. He takes it off and resumes his smile, now with an angry look in his eyes.
"Yes, and I need to go."
I try to turn the handle but my hands shake and I can't hold on. Will walks closer to me and my heart beats faster. I struggle with the handle with no success.
"If I didn't help you, you would still be in that forest! You could have died, or, or- It could have caught you."
His voice gets louder and louder as I struggle with the door. Come on. You need to get out of here...
The cat walks up behind Will and jumps onto his back, startling him. He turns around.
"You! I told you not to interfere again! He can't keep escaping! He's not supposed to make it past here!"
Will grabs the cat and throws it to the side. It slides across the floor to my feet. I reach down and touch it, feeling more strength flow into my body.
"I'm sick of you!! Would you just STOP coming back here? You DUMB little boy. When will you ever learn."
The cat pushes me into the door, knocking it open.
"Coming back here? What the heck are you talking about??"
His face distorts and my vision gets blurry again.
