- Three years later - -

"Apollo, wake up! Do you remember what day it is?"

I sit up in my bed and see Bea standing in the doorway with her everlasting smile.

"Hmm. Do I? How about you remind me? I think I forgot that it's the most special day of the year..."

I laugh and she rolls her eyes at me and points behind her.

"You get ready and I'll race you!!"

She dashes out the door and I laugh while getting out of my bed and making it before heading to the bathroom to start the day.

Three years ago on this day one of the biggest changes in my entire life happened. My dad joined my mum in the stars to save us and watch over us. He stopped the asteroid that could have killed more than half of the earth's population while also leaving me and my older brother on our own to figure out our lives. Luckily for us, Gregory adopted us, although my brother would prefer any other term, and we have been so happy to feel stability for the first time in forever.

I caught up and got into high school with Bea, my stepsister and best friend and we both moved up with honours every year. She joined a stupid amount of extra classes and clubs and somehow is a master at all of them. I tried a few and joined her a few times but it's hard to keep up.

My brother graduated from college and has a girlfriend who he has been dating for almost a year now. He works at a new bakery nearby our house and he makes the best cookies in town.

This day three years ago was announced as the newest international holiday and it represents safety and freedom. The star created by the rocket's explosion still exists to this day and stands for the same thing but it's a little bit more personal to me.

Bea runs into my room wearing a bright yellow dress decorated with big ribbons and lace.

"Did I win?" She asks, out of breath from running.

"Nope," I say, turning away from the mirror.

"But I did," She says, walking over to me and fixing my tie and patting down my hair.

"Aw, man. I swear I'll win next time. How do I look?"

She squints her eyes and puts her hand on her chin as if debating. She smiles suddenly and stands up straight.

"Ten out of ten. How about me?"

She spins in a circle and runs her fingers through her hair.

"Perfect. Is everyone else ready?" I ask.

"You bet!"

She smiles and follows me out the door where Will and Gregory are standing and waiting. Bea runs over to Hey Hey and scratches his head as she aggressively whispers compliments in his ears.

"Let's go?" Asks Gregory motioning towards the door.

I nod and we all head out, Bingo going with Will in his car. We arrive in about twenty minutes and there's a ton of news reporters there waiting for us and we get ushered to some seats in the back where all the important people sit.

"Nervous? Excited?"

Bea asks from the chair on my right.

"I think I'm okay." I laugh.

I hear the person on the stand call my name and motion for me to come on stage. Gregory offers an encouraging smile and Bea gives me two thumbs-ups. Will walks up behind them and pretends to cheer for me silently. I take a deep breath and walk onstage.

"Three years ago today I thought it was the end. Everything I knew had disappeared and I was alone. When I found out my father was leaving, he said it was the best thing for me. I didn't believe him, nor did I know what he meant. My life changed completely and it wasn't what I expected but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. We all have a choice to live in two different worlds. One is full of sadness and regret. Staying in the past and not letting go. The other is the one that has kept us all breathing to this day. The one with acceptance and forgiveness, gratitude and light. Three years ago, I didn't know the difference, but now I do. Someone once reminded me about the kind of life I had left. Why waste it feeling bad?"
