I tied the bandana around her eyes, listening as she giggled contently and I made sure she could not see anything. The sunset stretched around us like a warm blanket of orange, yellows, and pinks and the sea ran in and out, breathing deeply as it crashed against the sand and back out to the expanse of the sea. My fingers brushed against her warming cheeks as she bent her knees, squirming.
"Where are we going, Leo?" She asked, hitting my arm lightly. I steadied her by placing my hand on her waist and she shivered, the summer breeze coursing down her neck. I grinned when she moved a little bit in my touch, her confusion and curiosity dancing like fleeting shadows across her face. The setting sun painted her in shades of gold and rose, casting an ethereal glow upon her. With every beat the distant waves serenaded, she smiled more.
"Just a little while longer," I murmured, rubbing her arm. I was full of excitement and I couldn't contain it any longer...
"Alright, open your eyes."
I removed the blindfold and watched her face light up at the canvas splayed out in front of us. The sand was warm beneath us, sheltering us from the cold wind which whipped through us. It gave us a sense of life, and brought a gentle blush to her cheeks like the soft pink of rose buds. I watched her eyes scan the view and fog with tears. She took a few steps forward and I puffed out all of the air in my cheeks, kneeling down into the sand. This is it, I thought. It's time.
"Leo?" Kate turned around and gasped, starting to cry happy tears. I took her hands in mine and reeled her closer, paying attention to how her hair and the hem of her dress billowed softly in the wind. I pulled out the ring for her to see, and looked up at her, flashing a toothy grin. She gasped again and squeezed my hands.
"Kate, I can't imagine my life without you. You bring so much joy and laughter in my world, and I want to keep experiencing that every single day. Will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?
I watched her. Just for a second. I needed to gauge what she thought. Was she happy, sad, angry? Maybe I had upset her somehow. I looked away, my smile faltering. I thought about putting the ring away. But then I saw her crack the smallest smile and she knelt beside me, and before long, her lips were against mine. She gave me a tender kiss and our tears mixed together. I brushed her hair back. It was still slightly red from when we filmed Titanic a year ago. That film brought us together and bonded us for life. I laughed, she laughed and pressed herself into me."Are you okay?" I whispered, looking into her eyes. They were a whirlpool of green and blue that I would happily die in. She smiled and nodded as I pulled the ring out of the box, gently sliding it onto her finger. I was happier than anyone else at that moment and watching her, watching her eyes drop and lip quiver gently was enough to make me feel more serene than I've ever felt before. Her eyes were glowing with unshed tears and her skin was radiant. She is radiant.
We will never let go no matter what happens. Everything changed in this very moment between me and my lover. We were now engaged to be married. How could anyone be happier than us?
The rest of the evening was spent in the shallow end of the water, splashing each other and dancing around. The moonlight, the ring, and the stars were bright. But she will always be brighter.
