I don't want to seem jaded. I mean getting another gold medal in the 800m the next day was nice and having another world record in a time of 7:55.71 had been exciting, but all I'd been thinking about the last few days was Kit. She slept well the night after our little celebration, but ever since then she'd been on edge with worries about her grandmother. She'd muted the conversation with her, and texted her parents about not seeing them until after the competition so that they could tell her grandmother that same information for her. She had no need or reason to talk to the woman, but it didn't stop her from getting a major case of nerves.
So, while I did fine in my heat, and I got the new world record in the finals, it didn't matter to me. Nothing mattered if my little Sushi wasn't happy. And right now she wasn't doing well as she anticipated her grandmother's arrival.
The day before her preliminary heats, she was a nervous wreck, and had several issues with her dives, to the point that Janine pulled her from practice, so she didn't get hurt. Just watching, we could tell it was all just anxiety, and because her performances up to that point had been getting better and better, and we knew what the source was. We just couldn't do anything about it except get her through it as best we could.
The next two days were going to be huge for Kit, because this was her only event. I had a lot of races, so if I hadn't done well in one, then it would be okay because I could make it up with the next one. But I wanted Kit to be able to prove to the entire world that this was what she should be doing. She was amazing, and she should keep diving as long as she could.
But after Janine pulled her from practice and handed her over to me to hopefully get her feeling better, she was not doing well. Even on the shuttle bus back to the dorm she was quiet other than a few sniffles as she leaned into my body. I kept my arm around her, kissing the top of her head repeatedly, and whispering to her over and over that she was going to be okay.
I just needed to make her believe it, because until recently, she had been amazing.
When we got off the bus, I didn't hesitate in the least, I just scooped her up and carried her bridal style into the building and all the way to our room. Our room was empty, no doubt everyone was practicing, and I just took my beautiful girl to our room, and lay down on the bed with her, pulling her into my body in a tight embrace.
"You've got this, Kit, nothing is going to happen with your grandmother. I promise you that you will never be alone with her, and we will be by your side the entire time.
"But I don't want to even see her in the crowd, I don't want her to yell and distract me. I don't even want her in the arena," Kit said softly while tears leaked from her eyes. I know I can stand up to her in private, but I don't want her to make a scene, so I lose my concentration."
"Would it help if I sat next to her and made sure she didn't do anything? I could have my mother help too," I suggested. "And we could have arena security notified, so if she does anything at all, she'll be ejected and banned."
"Can you really do that?" she asked. Kit looked up at me with tear stained eyes and I knew I would do anything in the world for her.
"Yeah. I'm sure Janine and Coach Murphy can help too." Coach Murphy was technically in charge of all the divers but had left Kit's diving practices to Janine. In this case though, she might be the perfect person to help us out. "If she's distracting you, then she's a hazard to your safety, and that should be enough to get her out."
Her lips finally broadened into a small smile, and I gently kissed the tears off her eyes. "You're pretty much the perfect girlfriend," she whispered. "I love you so much!"
"Wait, pretty much? What else do I need to do?"
Those adorable lips turned into a smirk. "Well, after my finals you can show me what those big fingers of yours can do. That might make you perfect!"
