Helen was neither a loving wife nor was she in any form a mother at least from what Evelyn could remember that. That woman's life could only be summed up in one word 'pathetic'.
From when she could remember her parent had being fighting a divorce, separate, always screaming when they were breathing the same air. There was a time that like every child Evelyn had wanted a family but that idea has being squeezed out of her by her parent she had being raised by aunt Simi her maternal aunt. A loving woman whose idea of marriage has been changed by her elder sister. Aunt Simi had being an angel, petite with the most beautiful smile and cheerful personality, she was the only person Evelyn could say treated her like family but like all good things in Evelyn's life that had been taken away. The young woman had died at twenty-six from cancer. When Evelyn had travelled home for her burial, the town people had whispered that it was a curse, " a curse I tell you" an old woman had whispered to her neighbour as they sat in church "All female in that family die from cancer, my grandchild wanted to marry the slut took me a whole five days of starving to convince him not to" that was the first time little Evelyn had heard the word slut, she didn't know the meaning but a part of her knew it was not in anyway good but she had kept quiet like aunt Simi had taught her, to never talk to strangers.she found out from just evesdropping that it was part of the deal from the devil in exchange for their beauty. Years later when Helen died Evelyn was not surprise of course she was not dumb enough to believe it was a curse but she prayed it would soon be her turn.
After aunt Simi's death, her parent had to face the responsibility of bringing a child to the world, they passed her around like a rag before deciding that hiring a nanny was probably the best idea . Dad was rich and mom was trying to pin adultery on him to get money, Dad on the other hand was trying to hide his affair while trying to pin the same tag on her. The first rat and cat real life game Evelyn had seen. It had probably being happening for years and Aunt Simi had blocked young Evelyn's eyes but now she was like an orphan with rich relatives.
The first nanny young Evelyn had was Patricia, a Mexican woman whose food had worn her a place in Evelyn's heart and she had poured all her heart into to deal with the pain of losing aunt Simi but it was not meant to be as she had to leave for her own country. It was then she closed her heart to everyone. Evelyn never trusted another soul, her young heart too fragile to bear another loss.
It was a cold night when Helen found out about who her murderer would be 'cancer' and had called Evelyn in other to mend things after knowing how many months she had to live but Evelyn didn't have it in her to forgive the woman who she hadn't seen in six months, she had become delicate and fragile but the only thing Evelyn saw when she look at the woman was a murderer.
A rich woman who was too busy indulging life to care about her little sister who was too broke to pay for chemotherapy nor her young daughter.
After the sob story Evelyn had looked her birth mother in the eyes who was seeking support and told her "I hate you" she hadn't felt guilty, she had walked away her nanny shocked at seeing the shy child spill so much hatred into three little words. That was the last she heard from her mother. Last she heard, she died few months later still asking for her daughter.
