CHAPTER ONE: "LOSS."
"Did she pick up?" Alexis asked her younger brother. He called Melissa twice but there was no answer. It was now 10:15... 45 minutes after the murder.
"No... Maybe she's sleeping." Seth replied, "I mean we still have school tomorrow." He added with a shrug.
"Yeah, you're right. You should get some sleep too." Alexis told him as she walked upstairs.
Seth held his phone and walked upstairs as well. Both of their parents were asleep already when they returned, so the siblings both went to their rooms.

Seth called Melissa again before leaving for school to tell her to get ready. Seth and Alexis always picked up Melissa for school since her parents would typically leave early for work and come back home late. Melissa never really liked that about her parents because she wanted their love and they were just never there. But, she had Seth and Alexis which made up for her parents' absence.
"She's still not answering, I'm getting worried." Seth said anxiously.
"Calm down, it's probably nothing. We're picking her up anyway so let's just go." Alexis reassured him. She picked up her bag and carried it over her shoulder.
"Bye, mom!" Alexis called out to her mother as Seth followed her to the car.
Soon enough, they pulled up to Melissa's street. Seth had tried to call her again on his way, but she still didn't answer. However, the sibling duo saw something at Melissa's house that they were definitely not expecting. Alexis slowed down her car as they reached the house. Outside the house, they saw an ambulance with a bunch of police cars surrounding it. There was caution tape around the residence as well, alongside Melissa's parents. That was odd.
"Give me a sec., Lexi." Seth spoke as he stepped out of the car, slowly approaching the ambulance. Once he stopped, he saw a hospital bed being dragged out of the house. A person was lying on the bed, covered in white, bloody cloth. Seth hoped that person wasn't who he thought it could be.
He walked to Mel's parents who looked like they were in a devastated state. He sighed as he bit on his bottom lip anxiously. "Mrs. Hall?" He tapped on the woman's shoulder. She looked at him startled, wiping a tear.
"Is... Um. Is that...?" He stammered and trailed off.
"She's gone." Melissa's mother said in response. She sounded anguished. "I didn't get to spend enough time with her." Her voice broke off into silent sobs.
Seth looked at her shocked. "How?" He asked her. He tried to hide the sorrow in his tone but he failed miserably.
"She was stabbed. Three times." Mrs. Hall answered as she paused within each sentence to catch her breath.
"What?" Is all that could come out of Seth's mouth. He felt truly mortified and disgusted in a way that he's never felt before.
Seth couldn't talk anymore and he walked abruptly to his sister's car as she was sitting there with a concerned expression on her face.
"Who was that, Seth?" Alexis asked, but got no response. Seth sat in the car and stared out the windshield numbly. "Was... Was that Mel?" Alexis asked once again.
Seth felt his chest hurt and a tear streaming down his cheek. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry." Alexis wraps her arms around her brother as she tightly squeezed him. Seth couldn't hold it in anymore and he burst into tears.
"I shouldn't have left her, Lexi." He whispered. His face rested against his sister's chest. "I should've been with her!"
"It's not your fault." She told her younger brother while rubbing her hands against his back. "It's not your fault." Alexis repeated. Tears ran down her cheeks also. She felt so incredibly bad for her brother and Melissa's family.
Seth pulled away from the hug and wiped his tears. "She died on our anniversary." He said. "Today's our one year."
Alexis stared at Seth dumbfoundedly. "How'd she die?"
"I don't want to talk about it." Seth replied back numbly. "Just drive me home. I'm not going to school."
Alexis nodded and drove the car to the Harris residence. They sat together in silence. No one could really speak at that moment. During the whole car ride, Seth was completely lost in thought and so was Alexis. They shared the same thought though. Why?
Eventually, the car came to a stop.
"I'm staying home too." Alexis spoke up to break the silence. She parked the car in the garage and they both got out. Seth didn't say anything in return and he rushed upstairs to his room. Alexis really felt bad for her brother. But just like him, she was also upset to lose Melissa. Alexis really loved her like a sister.
