Wilbur stared at the flickering lights above the water from below, feeling his markings glow in response to the lights. The bite on his shoulder seems to ease as he swims closer to the surface.

He wonders if that odd not-human is up there...

He reaches his hand up, carefully poking his webbed claws out of the water, his blue scales glimmering in the light of the moon and stars.

Part of him wondered what kind of non-human entity it was he had encountered. Remembering how the being had seemed to pull the blood right from his veins. Leaving a two-fanged puncture mark in his shoulder that glowed an eerie purple.

He had never encountered something quite like it before.

Something that looked and behaved human, but had no need for breath. Something that had no pulse, no life. And yet acted like it lived.

Something that he was sure was dead . And yet its flesh had not decayed.

And with strength to rival his own...

Wilbur had always been curious by nature.

Which is why he was here now, slowly propelling himself forward and breaching the surface. Letting the markings around his eyes light up with an indigo glow to help him better see. Similar and yet so different to the eerie lavender cracks that had begun to spread from the bite wound inflicted by the creature he had tried to drown.

Ever since his rest had been plagued with colors and images that left him more tired than when he had slept. Nightmares and dreams that made no sense that he could barely remember when he woke.

So he searched.

And there, on the shore, he saw a figure.

Dark haired, with a chest that didn't rise and fall with breath.

Wilbur dove back under the water, swimming in that direction.

He swam until the sand began to slope upward into shore. His instincts chittered and clicked against the small space, but he pushed forward, swimming back up to poke his eyes out of the water again.

Upon closer inspection, he realized the creature had claws too. Smaller than his, similar to a human's fingernail, but sharper. Not quite the curved hooks he had for snagging unsuspecting fish and bleeding humans.

And...the not-human's eyes glowed faintly. Signaling that they had some kind of night vision.

They watched the waves further out, seeming focused.

Was it looking for him? In the same way he had been looking for them?

His frills perked up slightly at the thought, markings lighting up before he could suppress them.

The creature's gaze found him in the shallow water, locking eye contact before he could think to dive back under.

He kept himself slightly submerged, hiding his tail and claws under the darkened nighttime waves.

The other didn't say anything, keeping their mouth firmly shut.

Hiding its fangs.

A quick glance down showed him that the other was standing in the water, ocean lapping around its ankles.

He let his gaze travel back up, tilting his head in curiosity.

They mirrored the expression, head tilting in the same way the siren had done.

Wilbur slowly swam backwards, not going too far, letting the markings around his eyes light up again to try and reassure the not-human.

And after a minute of waiting in silence, the creature slowly walked forward, following him deeper into the shallows. Eventually following him far enough into the water so that it would come up to their chest.

After that point it wouldn't move further.

The siren was cautious as he moved closer, the odd pain in the bite fading the closer he got. He was so curious...wanting to learn more...

And he gets the feeling the other felt the same way.

He watched as it lifted their hand out of the water, holding it out to the larger of the two. And carefully Wilbur lifted his webbed claws out of the water to place in the other's outstretched hand.

There was curiosity in that glowing gaze. Curiosity in the way it examined his claws and webbing. Curiosity in the way it pushed the slightest bit closer, looking at his markings and frills.

Wilbur didn't understand a single thing about this creature.

But he understood curiosity.

And he understood fascination, discovery.

His fangs showed in his smile, each tooth a sharpened blade for ripping through scales and flesh.

And the non-human entity smiled with fangs too, sharpened needle-like points that had left two identical puncture marks against his skin.
