Wilbur quickly ducked around a corner as a gunshot went off, the bullet hitting precisely where he had been just a breath earlier.

"You can't keep running forever, bastard!" The mafia boss called, voice holding a vague sense of amusement.

The officer knew that the shorter was just playing with him at this point. Drawing out the hunt to satisfy his own instincts. Because of course it was a hunt, the avian had chased him into the abandoned warehouse specifically so he'd be blocked in. Wilbur had heard the bastard tell guards to watch the door. So even if he managed to slip past him he'd still end up dead.

He was a dead man either way.

Either Quackity would kill him, or his men would.

This is what he gets for siding with the law, really. This is what he gets for not accepting the under-the-table bribery.

But the job wasn't supposed to get him here. He was just called for a potential drug deal to bust. That was it. How the hell was he supposed to know the local mafia was involved!?

It was probably a set up.

Just enough of an excuse to kill him. Get him close enough to the shrike's territory to put him on the avian's radar as a threat.

No witnesses after all.

He heard the echoing click of the gun being reloaded, eyes scanning and looking for any way he can avoid the next shot.

Wilbur's heart pounded in his chest as his boots thuded against the concrete floor of the warehouse. His breath coming in short pants as his lungs burned. He's been going around in circles for a while now. At this point he's half convinced the mafia boss is just waiting for him to wear himself out.

Maybe he should just surrender at this point and let the shorter put a bullet through his head. If he's lucky the other might aim to make it quick and kill him instantaneously.

But Quackity wasn't a man known for his mercy. He was known for the wings on his back, for the cruel nature they brought. He was known for the scar on his face, and the power he commands.

Everyone in the police force knows what he is.

But none of them could do anything.

And Wilbur is about to meet the fate of the people that try.

He knew better than to look behind him. Relying on years of training and instinct to know when to duck or dodge an oncoming bullet.

The fact he's lasted this long is impressive.

But all good things come to an end, really.

Fear is an all consuming beast of an emotion. It's something primal and powerful, something so deep rooted in human nature that it was the driving force behind most things in their society. Fear of sickness, fear of war, fear of that which is unknown, fear of aging, and the fear of death. It was something so deep running, something so powerful, that it really makes every logical thought in your brain pale in comparison.

Fear keeps people alive.

But it can equally kill them.

He tried to grip the boards that covered the old window and pull them off. But they held firm. Making the dead end he had reached really a dead end. He tried ramming his shoulder into them, tried to pull them down. Anything really.
