I already knew way before I arrived at the library that things were great with Harmony and Blake. I had passed him in the hallway and he seemed like his usual, cheerful self.
"Hey, Cel!" he waved.
"Hey, Blake," I called brightly, my heart skipping a beat like it always did when he called me that. "How are things?"
"Great," he grinned. "You wouldn't believe it. Harmony cleared things up and everything's better."
"Really? Wow," I pretending to look surprised. Not like it was my idea or help or anything, right? "That's incredible!"
"I know. See you around!" he walked off brightly.
Feeling satisfied, I walked into the library saying, "Well, I see everything went according to plan, huh?"
"Yeah, it's all great." Harmony grinned as she looked up and spotted me. "Thanks. I mean, a lot."
"Anytime," I smiled.
"So are we going back to lunch?" she wondered.
"Nah, not hungry," I sat down nonchalantly. I had other plans.
Lily's worrying had gotten me thinking. So why not deal with all this stuff now rather than later?
Harmony sat down next to me,clearly confused.
"So, where are you from?" I started off lightly. No need to make it seem too big of a deal.
"Florida..." she replied slowly. She didn't seem to see where this was going.
Good. I didn't want her to think I was trying to be rude.
"Cool. One of my friends went there for vacation." My smile dipped a little as I said "friend." More like, hmm...a lot of things, but "friend" was not one of them...
"Oh," she nodded. I guess playing along as best as she could, although I could tell she was still confused, and maybe a little annoyed now.
"When did you move here?" Casual, right?
"Day before the first day of school."
"Done unpacking?"
"Yeah, sort of."
"How many siblings?"
She hesitated now. "One," she said slowly. "I don't know where he is, though. I don't know where anyone is, actually." She looked kind of surprised as the words left her mouth, like she hadn't meant to tell me.
"Wow," I said, feeling sympathetic. "So you don't have any family here? Mom? Dad?"
She shook her head slowly. Another thought popped into my head.
"Wait, so then how did you register into school?"
She looked alarmed for a second, then answered coolly, "I have a distant uncle who lives here. He signed me up."
"Oh, so you're under his custody."
"Yeah."
"Must be awful though, without parents." I turned red. "I mean, no offense. I just-I was just thinking-I-I'm sorry..."
"It's fine," she said stonily. "I'm used to it."
I felt bad immediately for pushing her into zones she clearly wanted to avoid.
"Can I go now?" she asked abruptly. "I have to ask my next period teacher something before class starts."
"Oh, ok." I said, getting up after her. "Talk to you later?"
"Yeah, sure." She said. I had a feeling she was upset with me.
I hoped I could fix that. Because with Gigi already on my case, I didn't need more problems.
