Repent In Ash

Colin was upset, by what Penelope had told him, by what she had written to him in the letters and by what she had written in the book.
He loved Penelope, relentlessly, completely and even for a long time. And in that moment he felt a blow to her heart, and he accepted the idea that the heart that he beat of hers was no longer hers but he would give it back to her.
She had a flashback of him in a beige trench coat entering the family home after a long journey and there she was, delightful in a peach dress, and he looked at her and imagined a life next to him, with a home, children and his heart was pounding. Even then he knew that they were meant to be together. But why had he fled? And now what could he do to regain his trust in him?
Anthony had left him alone, had seen him rather upset and had retired to his old office to check some things.
"Anthony..." Colin leaned his shoulder against the door jamb.
"Are you ready to tell me what you've been up to? Seeing Penelope in that condition, brother, made me want to pick up dad's riding crop again"
"Which she never used on us.." Colin said and then rolled his eyes at his brother who was staring at him in amazement.
"Yes, I have flashbacks..."
"Tell me..."
Colin entered his brother's office and closed the door behind him.

"Now what do you want to do?" churches
"I love Penelope, I don't have all the memory yet but I know! But Penelope I don't know if she will forgive me..."
"It's time you grew up and faced your life with a little more judgment, Colin you always ran away rather than make choices that would have changed your life, do you want Penelope?"
"Yes and I want him to understand that I regret what I did to him, I have to ask his forgiveness."
"You know it will be hard, the baron is very fond of Penelope."

Colin decided to go to Penelope's the next morning, he wanted her to recover from the bad day she had given him.
He introduced himself to the butler and waited, there was the possibility that Penelope didn't want to see him.
Penelope was with Albert in the living room, she Penelope had decided to tell him everything after the day spent with Colin and her return upset. Albert wanted to go and talk to Colin that same day but Penelope didn't want to.
"Milady, Colin Bridgerton wishes to speak to you"
Penelope squeezed the skirt of her dress in her hands and looked at Albert.
"I don't want to see him....Albert please send him away!" Penelope was shocked but Albert saw something else in her eyes, not anger, but pain .... immense pain. And he understood that as much as he might love her, Colin would always be a constant of her inside her.
He sighed and stood up, taking Penelope's hands between his.
"Darling, you have to close this chapter of your life, otherwise we will never be alone, you and I. Maybe I could talk to him first..."
"No..no I don't want to see him, I can't do it, please send him away." said Penelope taking her face in Albert's hands and kissing him passionately. Albert blocked her, he knew how to recognize a woman in love from a desperate one...and Penelope was desperate and in love with her...but both her emotions weren't aimed at him.
Albert kissed her forehead and smiled at her. And he went out to meet his victorious rival.

Colin turned as he heard footsteps coming, he knew it wasn't Penelope. She had a shocked face. Penelope didn't want that.
"Colin, Penelope is in the living room, she doesn't want to see her..." she didn't let him finish as Colin went towards him holding out his hand which Albert shook instinctively.
"I ask you something Albert, please take care of her." he said with his voice cracked by emotion "please make him forget everything in pain that I inflicted on him, everything. Make her serene. And, if possible, ask him for my forgiveness once again."
Then Coli headed for the door.
"Stop Colin, don't run away yet. You love Penelope more than your life. Only a stupid man in love would have embarked in the middle of the night knowing the dangers he could encounter. And I know that Penelope loves her too, unfortunately I see it even if Penelope she refuses to accept it. Penelope is not in love with me as much as I am with her. Penelope deserves not only peace of mind but happiness and love. Do whatever it takes to become this man Colin, and say goodbye for me to Penelope." said Albert walking out of their life.
