Well this certainly would have been his season, Penelope thought thoughtfully arm in arm with her friend Eloise. They were around the markets and they were both looking for something nice. Maybe a nice hat to impress some lord. And instead they found themselves again to buy .... pens.
Penelope consumed them for her secret life .... but Eloise, who wasn't accustomed to writing, what was the use of them? Penelope knew that her friend also had a secret ...
"Why do you need a pen too?" asked Penelope.
"Why do you need a pen again? Didn't we buy it a few days ago?"
"Why are you answering me with another question?"
"Is it because you don't answer me instead?"
"Are we going to go on like this all morning?"
"I do not know you tell me!" Eloise said winking at Penelope.
Penelope sighed, lately her friend was more bizarre than usual.
"Why still don't you answer Colin, weren't you friends?" Eloise asked all of a sudden.
"It was one thing when I was a little girl, now I'm a young woman of marriageable age, wouldn't you find it inconvenient for a man and a woman to have a pen friendship?"
"Not if you're friends, does the phrase 'pen pals' say that from time to time do you care so much about what people think?"
"What people say has always worried me, it's you who doesn't care what people think, on the contrary, the more you scandalize them, the happier you are"
Eloise couldn't hold back a smile.
"The most beautiful thing is to see the color that takes on the face of my poor brother, the viscount..." using a pompous tone exclusive to Anthony.
Penelope laughed at her hiding her mouth with her fan.
"I saw you..." Eloise said hugging her.
"But I'm still mad at you because you didn't answer me, why are you torturing Colin like that?"
Little did she know that now it was her friend torturing her. She didn't want to think about him and now she was starting to torture her gloves again. It was a craze she had begun to develop when she was waiting for Colin at the edge of the ballroom. She was waiting for him like a hero in shining armour, who came to save her from her loneliness and melancholy, reserving him a dance and a chat. But even that was a silly teenage fantasy, she had learned it the same day she had heard Colin tell Lord Fife, that he was not courting her but that he was simply fulfilling his duties or obligations from his family to "the girl" so he had labeled it. She had told him earlier that she would always protect her…and that she was precious to him. And now the person he had to protect her from was himself…
She really wanted to torture him ... with her indifference. That's why he didn't answer Eloise.
"Are you coming to Lady Danbury's ball tonight? God forbid I find myself fighting that wicked woman alone," Eloise said fondly.
"It depends.." Penelope said
"Yes, I'll play the polite bridesmaid and no, Colin isn't a city. Will you tell me sooner or later what my brother did to you? It's not like maybe he took some liberties with you" she said blocking Penelope with a jerk.
"Noo, of course not! How can you talk about Colin like that!" Eloise had the desired effect ... and she smirked at her friend.
“Then you still care about him…” then she froze. "It's bad growing up, as kids things are simpler but as adults things change..."
"I promise that as soon as I feel like it, I'll tell you about it, and...yes, I'll be at the dance, happy?"
"Yeah we'll be beautiful and we'll crush like cockroaches all the men who come to annoy us..."
"Eloise!!! I don't think that was the theme of Lady Danbury's ball," she laughed at her friend.
