I was sitting in the lounging area of the fire station when my brother quickly runs down the stairs from the loft. This happens quiet often. My 20 year old brother running out to go fix someone else's mistake. He became a volunteer fireman because he loves helping other people. He helped me and my mom. My mom was in a financial crisis. My brother had already moved out and came to my rescue. He let me move in with him and he also gave my mom some money to help her get back on her feet. I see him grab his things to get ready to go.
"Be careful." I tell him. He comes over to me and squats down in front of me while I was sitting on the couch.
"I always am." He says.
"I just want you to be okay." I say to him.
"I will be, and when I come back we have a very special 8th birthday to celebrate." He says. I giggle. It was 10:30. Me and my brother always stay up till 12:00 and celebrate a birthday.
"Okay." I say and he gets up before he kisses my forehead and runs out to the rest of his team.
I watch the news and see the fire was at a factory. I always watch to make sure everything is okay. It was now 11:00. Sixty more minutes till my birthday. That's when the factory explodes at one part. You can hear the news anchors talking about it. Not many people were inside, but they manage to get everyone out.
I was still sitting in the lounge patiently waiting for my brother to get home so we can celebrate my birthday. That's when I hear the thumping of boots on the hard wood floor. They were home! Just in time! It was 11:57. 3 more minutes!
"Hey Brandon!" I say when I see the familiar face of my brother's best friend. He looks at me with the saddest face in the world. "What's wrong? Where's Skylar?" I ask him. He sighs and squats in front of me like Skylar did before.
"When the explosion happened..." He pauses. What was going on? "Skylar was in that area." Oh god. Did something happen to him? "He didn't make it. When we got him out...it was too late. I'm so sorry Rylyn." 12:00. I turned 8. And the first present I opened was a door leading me to a long time of depression.
"Happy Birthday to me, and goodbye Sky." I say and let the tears roll down my face as I sob about my brother.
I wake up in a sudden jolt. It was just the same nightmare. Again. I have the same nightmare. It's not every night that it happens, but when I do dream it's that bad memory. I was young when that happened. I lived in Washington with my brother. Now I'm back in Virginia with my mother. My poor mother. I love my mother. I really do. Just after everything she has been through is difficult. Her being broke, her son dies, and not to mention that I haven't spoken in a little more than 9 years. Yes, when my brother died so did a part of me. I never spoke to anyone again. Nobody. My mother hasn't heard my voice since I was 5. That must be the hardest on her. She knows how hard it was for me because he was the only person I had. She tries to get me to talk but I just don't. I know how to talk. It's not like I forgot how to. I just don't feel like doing it.
After the events on my 8th birthday I had to move back here with my mom. I didn't mind that. I still don't. It's just how our lives have gotten. We have barely anything. We don't really have a house, we only have a few things for clothes, and we barely keep food on the table.
The house we live in is an abandoned house in the county. It doesn't look like a haunted house or anything. It's just an old farm house that people left from. They left their beds and other furniture here because they left in a hurry. They took their clothes of course. I wish they had left some since I have close to nothing. One pair of jeans, which have a hole in them. A plain grey t-shirt that I've been able to fit into for the past 4 years. One pair of dirty, torn, sneakers. I also have 2 pairs of underwear and 1 bra. I have to do my laundry every other day.
Food in our house comes and goes. Whatever we have we try to save, which isn't much food. I still go to school, everything is paid for by the government considering the circumstances me and my mother are having. I get free school lunch. Now that means I get the basics. Nothing more. I can't buy chips like other kids can, or sodas. It doesn't bother me. What does is when people complain on how their parents don't give them money. Do you hear me complaining on how my mom never gives me money? No I don't. I'm the one to give my mom money. I earn money from my job I have.
At school the kids are rude to me. I know why. They call me loser, stupid, ugly, dirt, helpless, trash. They call me everything in the book. The one that hurts the most is poor. I know I said that I accept the fact that I am poor, but it doesn't mean that I have to be reminded every single day that I have no money, that I look pale, that I wear the same thing everyday. I don't like to be reminded.
The only thing that is good in the school is my best friend, my only friend. His name is Carter. He knows my whole story. I told him everything. Okay well I didn't tell him. I wrote it down to tell him. He felt sorry for me. Which I didn't need. But it felt good to know that he knew what I went through. He saw me for my personality, not the poor girl. He was the only person who would ever treat me like I was equal to them. I'm glad to have him in my life. He's the only good thing I have.
