Of course, I immediately picked up, finally able to hear the voice I had been longing to hear for the past two days.
"Rylin?" I heard that same worry in Remington's voice as I had heard in Phoebe's, the days before. Even if her voice had sounded so different this morning... Remembering the look of disgust on her face made my chest icy and cold.
"Hey." I managed to say, suddenly out of breath.
"Hi., he answered. I could hear that he was smiling, which made the corners of my mouth lift a bit, too.
There were a few blissful quiet seconds, where the nerves rushing through my body turned into a warm, buzzing feeling in my chest.
"So you left your charger with me," Remington finally said.
"Yeah, I did." I curled the green charger around my finger, felt my face getting red and my smile grew. As if I was fifteen again, talking to my crush on the family phone.
"I gotta be honest, though, I think my blazer was a better parting gift," he mused, and I imagined him sitting on a couch somewhere, with the same idiotic smile on his face as I had right now. That's what I loved about Remington. Even if he didn't know I needed it, he said silly things that cheered me up.
"You better take good care of it, Leith. I know where to find you."
"Is that a threat, Weaver?"
I rolled my eyes, even if he did not see it. "It might be."
"Well, you know what I will say. As long as you-"
"Wear that one dress again, yeah. You are starting to repeat yourself."
"I can't help it." I imagined him shrugging on the other end of the line right now, muscle moving under his gorgeously- no, Rylin. Be normal. "Anyway," Remington said, "how have you been, these past two days?"
And thinking about everything that had happened, my lip started to quiver. "A lot.." My voice broke, and so did the heaviness in my chest, once again dripping all over me, "I'm not sure if I want to talk about it."
Remington's voice was soft. "Are you okay?"
"No," I sighed. There was no point in lying, not with him. "My life is just a fucking mess right now."
His tone immediately shifted to a seriousness I wasn't used to with him. "Did something happen?"
And even if I did not want to talk about it, it felt good that he asked. "I told Phoebe." The words stumbled from my mouth, and my chest, which had been numbed by the gentleness in his voice, started to hurt again. "I told her everything. That I lied, that I fucked up at work, because of you." And I realised I am in love with you but I am terrified you will find out, one way or another.
"Isn't telling her a good thing?" He said, hesitating, "I mean, it looked like it weighed you down a lot."
I shook my head. "Well, I think she hates me now. I went back, this morning. She sent me away again," my breath got unruly, "and I'm pretty sure I deserve it." Saying that out loud hurt even more, fear taking hold of my lungs. What if Remington agreed? What if everyone agreed?
"That's not true." Remington's voice was gentle, as if a soft smile played around his lips on the other side of the line. So gentle, so real, that I almost believed him.
I leaned on the counter, a sigh leaving my lips. "Sometimes I feel like it is."
"Don't we all? But she will forgive you, eventually. I promise."
I wanted to believe him, but flashes of what transpired yesterday played before my eyes, and more of the truth started slipping out. "I doubt that. Apparently, Phoebe saw I was struggling, recently, so she was nice enough to get an old friend of ours to cover for me for a while, so I could take a breather, they'd even pay me a part of what she'd make." I took a deep, shaky breath. "But yeah, of course, I was tired at work because of, well, everything with you... I think you can imagine how she reacted when I told her that."
