INTERLUDE: TAEHYUNG

♠︎♠︎

You'd been right when you'd thought that Taehyung was a good person. But being a good person doesn't mean that you can't make mistakes.

He'd learned that the hard way, after all.

Taehyung wasn't thinking about being a good or a bad person out on that landing field. He had just watched his best friend kiss the woman that got away from him, sweeping you off your feet like that after you landed, kissing you brazenly in front of everyone as if to say, yes, she's mine, deal with it.

Part of him wanted to cry out at the injustice, that Jungkook was doing something wrong - but you were smiling so broadly with your arms looped around his neck, eyes watering from the skydive and some other hidden emotion, and Taehyung knew then that this was what you wanted too.

It was only now that your words from the forest earlier that day really sunk in.

He was too late. Jungkook had stolen your heart.

He should be happy for you, especially now that you were friends. Instead, his mind had gone blank, and his emotions ruled over him.

He was angry. At Jungkook, yes - though he knew this was unfair - but mainly at himself.

Taehyung knew how this would play out. He would have to watch as you fell for Jungkook instead - a man who had never let you down, never left you alone in bed wondering why he'd gone. Never been so afraid of his own life getting in the way that he'd ruined any chances of a relationship with you.

Part of him could accept this. He was the one who fucked up - so he had to deal with the consequences.

And yet.

There was a tiny, miniscule part of him that just. Couldn't. Take it.

After all, hadn't you forgiven him? And wasn't he a good person, a good friend? Didn't he deserve a second chance, and didn't you say it might happen, before your feelings had developed for Jungkook?

It was Jungkook who had ruined it, he realised. Jungkook who had stepped in and destroyed Taehyung's hopes of a reunion before he even had a chance. If Jungkook wasn't in the picture... who knows what might have happened between the two of you.

It was this line of thinking that made him do what he did next. Because there was, he realised, a way of taking Jungkook out of the picture.

It happened quickly. He didn't even register that he was walking off the field, his phone in his hand, before it was pressed to his ear, and already dialling.

When the other person picked up, Taehyung wished he had hesitated for even a moment. But that tiny part of him was flooding his entire body with jealousy, and anger, and a need to act, to do anything that would give him a chance of being the man you looked at with tears in your eyes when he kissed you.

And besides, he wasn't doing this to hurt anyone. He was doing it to remind Jungkook of why he was here. To remind you of why you were here.

So he didn't hesitate.

"Hey," he said into the phone, voice trembling. "I have a proposition for you."

Nervous laughter echoed on the other end of the line. "Okay. What is it?"

Taehyung closed his eyes, as if not wanting to witness himself doing this. But he spoke anyway.

"How does a free vacation sound?"
