I watched as the day I knew was coming finally came, my name was dragged out that glass bowl, even though it was only in there 4 times. But when your the younger brother of one of the greatest victors in history, what's a guy to do

The name "Perseus Jackson '' rang through the crowd, though none of them were surprised, just upset that it had to be when I was so young, not a little older.

As I walked up to the stage, my face was emotionless, my hands still, not even a shiver running through my body.

'It's all necessary' I told myself, 'You have to look brave. A broken boy is a dead boy'. But in truth, I wasn't sure if I wanted to win, not when victory and death left you in the same state: a shell off your former self.

Sorry about that, I started a little late, I'm Percy Jackson, from the Districts, and younger brother to one of the greatest victors of all time. Now, let's go from the start.

I was only 7 when my brothers name was pulled from the jar, and sure, it was a long time ago, but I still remember every little detail: the sinking feeling in my stomach when it had happened, the salty tears that dripped into my mouth, and worst of all, my mothers expression the moment it happened. My world had been shattered in that moment and there was nothing I could do about it.

Back then, I didn't understand the reaping, I still believed the lies the capitol fed us at school. "It's an honour to compete, that's why people volunteer." I remember Mrs White, my 1st grade teacher, had told me.

See, that's the problem with kids, not only are they gullible and will believe anything you say, but they're like sponges and soak up any information you give them, whether it's true or not, and so I soaked up that information, and held onto it right up until that moment, because at that moment the truth smacked me in the face. And let me say, that smack left a mark.

"Mommy, what happened?" I asked, still unable to comprehend what was happening

"I'll explain later honey, but your brother just got chosen for a big event."

"Yay, I'm sure he'll do great, he's good at everything."

I was ecstatic, I thought that my brother could do anything, but when my mother turned to look me in the eye, and her beautiful brown hair clung to her tear stained cheeks, I swear I could feel my eyes dimming, my enthusiasm waver as I tried to figure out what was wrong.

"Mommy, what's wrong?"

"Oh it's just a very hard competition, that's all"

"But he'll win, won't he?"

"You can ask him that yourself, let's go visit him before he leaves."

And so we did, walking through the halls of the Justice building, which were fancier than anything I had ever seen in my life. With the velvet couches spread through the corridors and the elevator, well that shocked my seven year old brain. But when the doors opened, I saw the face of the best brother I could ever have staring at me.

The face of Finnick Odair.

I can't remember if I cried, or sobbed, but I definitely did one. He was my role model, and only 14, what were the chances of him returning? One in a million? Maybe two in a million if he's lucky.

"Heya kiddo, how are you doing?" he asked, his voice breaking on the last word.

'He doesn't think he can do it...' I thought to myself, but he had to. I needed him home. And so I told him that, begged him to come home to me.
