Jung Wooyoung was in love with Kang Yeosang, the crown prince of the Kingdom of Aurora. He knew it was pointless--dangerous, even, if anybody found out, but he couldn't help it. Sometime during the four years he'd been tasked with the prince's protection, he'd developed a fondness for Yeosang. And that fondness turned into love. Yeosang was misunderstood. Wooyoung was the only one to see that truly, the prince had a gentle soul. His spoiled tendencies were no more than the product of his upbringing.
It was clear that Yeosang had no idea. The prince dressed in front of him each morning and bathed in front of him each night, and it took every ounce of Wooyoung's self-control to keep his eyes trained forward.
For the shortest moment, Wooyoung found himself daydreaming that morning. He was only brought from his thoughts and back to the dressing room when Yeosang said, "Come, Wooyoungie. I'm hungry for breakfast."
'Wooyoungie'. Never Wooyoung. The nickname made his heart melt every time he heard it, though he was careful never to let it show. He trailed behind Yeosang in silence as they made their way through the maze of a castle.
For reasons unknown, Yeosang liked to eat most of his meals in the dining hall mostly utilized by other servants. Wooyoung hated it but never said a word of complaint. It hurt to see Yeosang eat alone but more than that, it was the other servants that angered him.
Behind the prince's back, many of the other palace servants rolled their eyes and made faces at him. Not to mention what they said about him when he wasn't around. Wooyoung resented them for it. Yes, Yeosang could be demanding at times, but he didn't deserve such disrespect.
Wooyoung put food on his plate alongside Yeosang. The prince finished first and left to take a seat on an empty part of one of the four long benches. Wooyoung longed to sit next to him but refrained. He could only eat with the prince if he had a direct invitation. So, he scanned the room, found the only servant he could tolerate in the castle, and brought his food there.
"Yunho," he nodded in greeting as he sat down.
Yunho smiled. "Good morning!"
Wooyoung had no idea how the servant was always so happy when he spent most of his days cleaning the castle. Yet every time Wooyoung saw him, he was greeted with a smile.
"Where are you stationed today?" Wooyoung asked as he started to eat.
"Bathrooms," Yunho said. Anybody else would have said it with a grimace, but Yunho seemed entirely unbothered. "I don't mind, I'll have a lot of friends with me."
They chatted idly until Wooyoung saw the prince rise. He bid his friend farewell and followed after Yeosang.
The morning and early afternoon were largely the same as any other day--Yeosang attended his first class and was on his way to lunch when a servant intercepted them.
She bowed deeply. "Pardon my interruption, Your Highness, but the Queen requests your presence in her tea room."
Yeosang nodded and dismissed her, then changed his course. The Queen's tea room was not far from their current location so it didn't take long before Yeosang entered, followed by Wooyoung. The tea room was beautiful--stained-glass windows covered one wall and various plants and flowers decorated the space. In the middle was a small table with two plates of food.
Wooyoung closed the door behind them and took his post beside it while Yeosang took the empty seat across from the Queen. "Good afternoon, mother."
"Good afternoon, sweet prince," the Queen gestured to the food. "Eat. You must be ravenous."
Yeosang took a single bite. "Is there a reason for this lunch, mother?"
The Queen swallowed. She didn't look nervous, but wary of her son's reaction to what she was about to say. "I am sure you know that we are desperate for you to find a bride."
