Dmitri dressed the same way the people who inhabited the yacht club did. Smooth white button ups and wine-red turtlenecks, but his ratty old sneakers gave it away. He was overbearing and beautiful enough to get away with it. Soft mocha hair framing his green eyes and too many freckles too count. He was never alone for the night. He lived in the trailer park near the school but refused to let anyone but his best friend know it. She knew everything about him. She knew how unhappy he was, she knew he used sex and cigarettes to cope with the loss of his mother, and she knew about his father and what he did to him. And she knew she was in love with him (he knew too but wouldn't let on.)
Dmitri was going to kill himself that day, he thought. The pain of his mother's death was eating him alive, he didn't know how to live without her. He thought again about how he'd do it, as he exited the school doors. Immediately a heavy force pushed him into the chipping brick wall of the school's side and he grunted involuntarily.
"We need to talk. Wipe that smug-ass smile off your face!"
Dmitri laughed. The whole situation just felt so cliche, like a movie scene from the 80s. This was supposed to be the 90s, there should be a little less commotion he thought.
"Go on, Kevin. Talk! Use your big boy words....if you can."
Dmitri found himself clever and he liked to showcase it when things like this happened (and they happened a lot.) Because despite his fancy clothes, he was an outcast. Everyone knew he wasn't what he presented himself as. He drank, he smoked, he slept around with anyone willing and this pissed people off (especially the poor cuckold boyfriends whose girlfriends Dmitri had stolen for a night.) He was desired, or hated. Nothing in between.Blam! Right to the nose. Dmitri instinctively clutched it and winced.
"God, I think you broke it!" He mumbled"Good!" Kevin spat back
"You've been sleeping with Sarah. You better knock it off."Dmitri laughed and shrugged
"It isn't my fault your poor girlfriend isn't satisfied with your baby dick."Kevin jabbed him in the gut and Dmitri doubled over before Kevin could emit another blow.
"You gonna stop? Or do I need to keep going?"
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Dmitri wheezed
"I'm sorry my dick is bigger than yours.""Why you-"
A tan arm grabbed Kevin's fist before it could strike again
"Let him go Kevin, what're you fifteen? This is just embarrassing. Punching him out won't make your girlfriend stop cheating.""Fuck off Nicodemus." Kevin mumbled, keeping his arm pinned against Dmitri's bruised neck.
Nicodemus ran his tongue over his teeth
"How tall are ya Kevin?""5'9" Kevin replied reluctantly, unsure where Nicodemus was going with the question.
"I'm 6'2. You don't really want me on your ass, do you?"
Kevin didn't respond to that. He knew Nicodemus would kill him in a fight. His face dropped and he let Dmitri go. Sheepishly turning to leave.
"You stay away from her." He said meekly, in an almost pleading way."No promises."
Kevin sighed and left for good, lumbering away.
Dmitri's smile dropped as he hunched over with his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath.
"You saved my life man, thanks."Nicodemus was quiet for awhile. He didn't like to threaten people and he knew that Dmitri had probably deserved to get beaten up by Kevin. It was as if he didn't care for anyone but himself.
