The date.

After the interview, I stood up and shook hands with both women sitting on the opposite side of the table. "Good to finally meet you Madeline" "good to meet you both two. and thank you for the opportunity" I walked out the door and smiled to myself. I think I did pretty good and they both seemed to like me. I walked outsside into the New York air and let out a sigh of relief. I decided on walking back to the hotel since it isn't that far and I remeber the way. I smiled again and pulled out my phone and decided to call my sisters back home. I call Avery because I know she is not in class right now and wait till she answers. It stops ringing so I say "hello?" I hear shuffling, laughing and someone yelling "hold on Maddie!" after a few more seconds it is calmer and I hear Avery say "you're on speaker with everyone Mad!" "Hey everyone" I say with excitement in my voice. I hear Ashley say "how'd the interview go?" I pause for a second, smile and then say "well... it went GREAT!!!" I hear them all cheering and stuff then say "I was confident and went in with my head held high. I answered those questions like there was no doubt in my mind that I am the perfect one for this job" "we're so pround of you Maddie" "great job" the compliments and congrats kept on rolling in. When they finished talking, I hear Olivia say "Maddie, when are you coming home? we miss you!!" "i miss you too guys but not until tomorrow." "why can't you leave tonight?" I pause for a moment and debate telling them about the random guy who asked me out on a "date" tonight. They've been extremely protective of me since the whole Ben thing. I swear when it comes to guys, instead of 20 questions, its like 100 questions. I love them but I think I will wait to tell them. "I still have alot of New York to see! plus i've already payed for the hotel room for tonight" That was not technically a lie. I did already pay upfront for all three nights so I didn't want to lose money. I hate lying to them but I don't want them to be texting me every 30 seconds tonight. "i'll see you guys soon. Don't worry" As I round the last corner, I see the hotel and thank god! my feet are starting to hurt a little. I walk through the doors, still listening to my sisters talking to me and answering them when appropriate. I walk over to the elevator, I push the up arrow button and wait for the doors to open. Im laughing at something Avery said when the doors open and I see the mysterious guy. Again in his hat and sunglasses. As he was walking off the elevator he smiled at me and i'm not gonna lie, when he smiled at me it kinda took my breath away and I got butterflies in my stomach. Who is he? He didn't say anything, he just smiled at me and walked by. How can a random guy like this have this sort of effect on me? This is too wierd. I walk into the elevator. I can't wait to be back in Texas where everthing is normal. I suddenly hear a voice and look down to realize that I am still on the phone "Maddie? Are you there? Are you ok?" "yeah. yeah im fine. i'm sorry. I just sort of spaced out for a second. anyways, i'm back at my room so i'm going to go change and go sight seeing. I'll talk to yall later" "bye. we love you and are so proud of you" "thanks. Love yall too. Bye!" I hung up and walked down the hallway to my room. I opened the door and noticed a note on the floor. I picked it up and unfolded it. It was handwritten. No one does that anymore.

Hey there Texas! Just wanted to let you know that the restaurant that we are going to is a little more upscale and I apologize for not telling you sooner. Also, I have made the reservation under the name Texas. So, in case you get there before me, you know what to do ;) Can't wait to show you a different side of New York.

He SO thinks this is a date. But i'm standing my ground! What am I going to do? Ugh. I plop myself down on the bed and even though I am a little frustrated about the whole situation, I can't help but smile. It is nice to be noticed again. And from what I have seen of him, he's not that bad looking. Not to mention, he's got a pretty good looking butt! lol I may or may not have been checking him out in the elevator the other day. Anyways, I look through my suitcase and after what seems like hours and hours of looking for an outfit that would be appropriate. I go to the closet and pull out a grey dress that hits about 2 or three inchees above my knees and has a deep v neck on the front and the back. The straps are wide and it is made out of a more flowy material and it topped off with a satin waistband that ties into a bow in the back. I decide that I should wear my dark purple heels with rhinestones on the going up the heel. I sigh a breath of relief and put the outfit in the closet. I decide to curl my hair a little. My dirty blonde hair hits about 4 inches below my shoulders. Sometimes it's hard to curl but today it has been working to my advantage. I look at the clock. 5 pm. I search through the channels to find something to watch and decide on watching Friends. I scroll through my phone and text a few sisters back who had texted me earlier. I keep myself busy for the next two hours or so and then decide to do my makeup. I decide on doing winged eyeliner and soft pink and nude eyeshadows. I put on some foundation and mascara and step back and look in the mirror. "Well, that's different" I debate for a few seconds but I decide that it looks ok. I pull out my dress and heels. I throw on the dress carefully, trying not to mess up my hair or makeup. I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and spray my hair with a little hairspray. "what am I doing? this isn't a date!" frustrated again, I decide on a nude colored lipstick and I throw on my heels and grab my purse. I look at my phone and see that it is now 7:40. I walk down the hall and get into the elevator. Once outside, I call a cab and get in giving him the address and name of the restaurant. He looks back at me and nods and starts to drive off. At about 7:50, I plug the name of the restaurant and see that it is going to take another 20 to 30 mins because of traffic. We are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic and I sigh. I look out the window and think about the mystery guy. Will he show up in sunglasses and a hat again? Will i ever find out who he is? Or what his name is? I'm pondering these thoughts and must have been thinking for longer than I thought because we pull up and I see the name of the restaurant outside. I look at my phone and see that it is now 8:20. I pay the cab driver and thank him. I step out of the cab and look up at the restaurant. It looks a little more than "just a little upscale". I'm glad i decided on a dress and heels instead of just like a skirt or jeans. Let's hope I can afford this place. I take a deep breath and suddenly realize all the butterflies in my stomach. I walk in and there are at least 20 people waiting to be seated. I go up to the seating hostess. She smiles at me but it does not look sincere. I smile back anyways and she says "how can I help you?" "Hi I think the reservations are under Texas" she kinda gives me a funny look like she doesn't think I am telling the truth. When she looks down, she looks a little surprised. she looks up at me and says "right this way" I take a deep breath and follow her. The walk to the table seems like the longest walk in my life. We finally arrive at a table that is somewhat secluded from the rest of the customers, and there he is. His back is to me and doesn't notice I am there until he sees the seating hostess. He quickly stands up and turns around and I cannot believe who is standing there. Josh. Freaking. Hutcherson. It all starts to make sense now. Why he wouldn't take off his hat and sunglasses. Why there was such a big crowd outside the hotel (mainly girls). Why he looked so familiar. It all makes sense! He smiles when he sees me and makes his way over to my seat and pulls my chair out. He sits down in front of me and smiles at me before saying "I was starting to think you were going to stand me up" I laugh a little more flirty than I meant to. "I told you I didn't want to be rude." He smiles and I continue "I just like to be fashionably late" He laughs and then I say "sorry. I didn't even think about there being traffic. Its not this bad in Texas" He smiles and looks me in the eyes. And Oh. My. Gosh. I have never seen more beautiful hazel eyes. "I guess I shouldv'e let you in on that little secret" "ya think?" We both laugh in unison and then he says "so Texas, what is your real name?" "well, I don't know if I should tell you that yet" He looks at me a little confused and I continue "I mean we still are strangers" he smiles slightly and then says "well I can fix that" He looks into my eyes again. He has got to stop doing that!! Honestly, I never really thought of him as attractive or anything but him in person, sitting in front of me with that charming smile and intriguing stare, I can hardly resist him. "Well, just so you know, my name is Josh" I smile and say "it's nice to meet you Josh" he smiles and continues "I grew up in Kentucky and I was just in town for an audition" "did you get it?" "nah. I don't think I did. But that's ok" "well, i'm sure they will realize that they made a huge mistake when it's too late to do anything" I smile and look down at the menu. Great. There are no prices on anythhing. I look up and he is smiling while doing the same, and if i'm not mistaken, he is blushing a little. I find what I want to eat and then grab a glass of water the is in front of me and take a sip. I look back at him and he says "so tell me about yourself Texas" "well I'm a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and I'm a business management major." "wow. well what are you doing all the way in New York City?" suddenly the waitor inturrupts and we order our dinner. he looks back at me and then says "so why are you in New York" "well, a last week I got a letter from Kate Spade & Company saying that they wanted to follow up from the phone interview. So one thing led to another and before I knew it, I was flying out here to New York" "well what do you think about NewYork?" "I think it's great! Totally different that Texas though" he laughs and then says "just a little" It is silent for a few minutes but surprisingly, it is not awkward. I take another sip of my water and set the cup back down. He does the same then says "so tell me more about yourself. What else is there?" I tell him about the sorority and how that takes up a lot of my time since we do so many fundraisers and community service. "If my sisters knew I was here with you, they would freak out!" he laughs and says "i'm not gonna lie, but I thought that you would freak out when you found out who I was" we both laugh and I say sarcastically "well someone thinks highly of himself" he dramatically rolls his eyes and we both laugh again. I haven't laughed this much in a while. He's just so easy to talk to. Damn it!! THIS IS NOT A DATE! The waiter brings out our food and we eat slowly while still talking and sharing about ourselves. He tells me about growing up in Kentucky and I tell him about how college has changed my life but for better. We finish eating and the waiter takes our plates and brings out the check. He grabs it up quickly and laughs at my poor attempt to look at it "did you honestly think I would let you pay?" "hey buddy! this isn't a date! So therefore, I should pay for my own food" he rolls his eyes and hands the waiter his credit card. "Just because this isn't a date doesn't mean you can pay for your own food. I invited you here so logically, I should pay for you especially because I invited you to a more expensive restaurant" i just rolled my eyes and gave up.

The waiter brought Josh his receipt and Josh stood up and held out his hand for me to stand up. I took it and stood up, but dropped it immediately.

We walked outside and he looks at me and says "so since we aren't strangers anymore, how about we do a little sightseeing together" I think about it hesitantly "well, i don't know. i mean i went sightseeing yesterday" he looks a little disappointed but then says "well how about we go get some dessert?" it's like he knows me already "ok I guess that won't hurt" he smiles like he just accomplished something then says "you ok with taking the same car?" he asks as a black car pulls up. I roll my eyes as he opens up the door for me and I get in. He runs around to the other side of the car and also gets in. We are both in the back because he has a driver. The back is seperated from the front and we have some privacy. "So about your name?" "I don't know. I'm starting to like you calling me Texas" he laughs a little and the rest of the ride we laugh and joke around as though we have known each other for years. We pull up to the most adorable ice cream cart on the outskirts of central park. Unwillingly, he buys us both an ice cream cone, only because I didn't have any cash on me, and we find a bench and sit down. It is silent but I can see Josh glancing at me out of the corner of my eye. I decide to break the silence "Josh, can I ask you something?" "sure" I hesitate a moment before I continue "why did you want to take me to dinner?" "honestly?" I nod and he continues "well, you just seemed really interesting. And I really did want you to feel welcome. I know that being here can be overwhelming" we returned to silence until I spoke again "thank you" "your'e welcome Texas" I giggled a little, took a deep breath and then said "My name is Madeline" He smiled from ear to ear and then said "well then Madeline, you look absolutely beautiful tonight" I can't help but blush and look away. We walk for a bit in the park and just continue talking. Eventually we make our way back to his car and we drive back to the hotel. He runs around and opens the door for me and we walk quickly inside. It is not until we are inside that I notice we did not go through the front entrance. I understand why, I mean I did not want to be bombarded with Josh's fans and photographers and stuff. We get to the elevator and he walks me to my door. we stop at my door and Josh is the first to talk "you know, I don't know the last time I laughed this much" "me either" "I'm glad you went with me to dinner" "me too. I feel officially welcomed to New York now" he laughes and look at me. I smile and say "how about we go for coffee in the morning? as sort of a thank you for looking out for me I guess?" "sure that sounds great" "how does 9 sound?" "perfect" "great! I guess i'll see you in the morning then. oh and this time, it's my treat!" he puts up his hands as if he is surrendurring and says "fair enough" I open my door and look back at him one more time and say "bye Josh" He looks me in the eyes, smiles and says "goodnight Madeline" I close the door, lean up against the wall and slowly slide to the ground. my heart is beating abnormally fast. "I can't be falling for him"
