EMILY'S P.O.V.
I was walking down the hallway, lost in thought, when I accidentally bumped into someone. The impact made me stumble two steps back. Lifting my gaze, I was met with a pair of piercing forest-green eyes that glared at me, brimming with irritation.

“I’m sorry,” I stammered, stepping aside. But when he made to walk past me, something inside me urged me to stop him. Summoning all the courage I had, I blurted out, “I wanted to thank you for saving me—and apologize for bumping into you.”

He raised an eyebrow, his expression shifting from annoyance to curiosity. “Why the thank you?” he asked, his tone laced with confusion.

“The nurse told me someone brought me to the infirmary…”

“And you think it was me?” he interrupted, mocking me with a smirk.

“Well, I just thought…”

“Thought your knight in shining armor came to rescue you?” he sneered.

His words stung, but I tried to hold my ground. “No, I just—”

“Why would you think I saved you?” he cut me off again, his tone growing colder. “Do you think you’re in any way important to me?”

I faltered, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks. “No, I didn’t mean—”

“Listen here, sweetheart,” he interrupted once more, his voice dripping with disdain. “I saved you, yes. But don’t for a second think it’s because you matter to me. If it had been anyone else, I’d have done the same thing. I hate weak, pathetic girls like you, so keep your thanks and stay the hell away from me.”

His words cut deeper than I expected, but I refused to let him see the tears welling in my eyes. I bit back the lump in my throat and whispered, “Sure.” The word was barely audible as I turned on my heel and walked away.

As soon as I reached the restroom, the dam broke. Tears streamed down my face as I leaned against the sink. I pulled off my hoodie and splashed water on my face, trying to compose myself. But my moment of solitude was interrupted by the sound of the door opening.

Panicking, I grabbed my hoodie and slipped into one of the stalls, locking the door behind me. From my hiding spot, I could hear the voices of a group of girls.

“Did you see the girl with the hoodie?” one of them asked.

“Yeah,” another replied.

“I think she wears it because she’s not that pretty,” a third voice chimed in.

“Agreed. She’s doing us all a favor keeping it on,” said a fourth, prompting the others to burst into laughter.

Their words stung, but I clenched my fists, determined not to let them break me. When they finally left, I emerged from the stall, adjusted my hoodie, and took a deep breath. The bell rang, signaling the end of the day. I hurried out of the building, eager to escape.

Outside, my dad’s car was already waiting. “He’s fast,” I muttered under my breath as I climbed into the passenger seat.

“Good afternoon, Dad,” I greeted, trying to sound normal.

“How was school?” he asked, his eyes filled with concern.

“I’m fine,” I replied, avoiding his gaze. Not wanting to talk further, I put in my earphones and played a calming playlist, letting the music drown out my thoughts.
