"I hate you," I shouted jokingly through Dex's door.
"You love me really." He called back. I smiled and headed off to school. This wasn't the first time I'd had to walk to school because his lordship couldn't be bothered going. My bag was so heavy that I really regretted not leaving some stuff in my locker overnight. Wouldn't've been a problem if someone got out of bed. I couldn't be too mad at Dex though he'd had a late night. Plus, I'm pretty sure I heard Greg come round last night, so he probably didn't get much sleep.

As I walked past the boys on my way into school, I noticed Mitch's face was still bruised from his fight a couple of nights ago. Jackson and Joe were smoking, even though I'd told them to quit multiple times. Colin was in his own world with his headphones on and Lee was talking Mitch's ear off about something. I was surprised they'd shown up today, usually if Dex decided not to come in they all stay off.

Gabby was standing at my locker when I arrived. "Hey, did you see the news this morning?" She asked as I dumped my bag and got out the necessary textbooks.
"No, why?" I turned to face her while shutting my locker.
"Some kid was killed last night. Apparently, there was a gang fight, and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time." We'd started our journey to class as she told her story.
"Oh my god, really?" I didn't know gangs were fighting. Was this something to do with why Tyson wasn't at the match last night?
"And he was killed on your street Kloe." She said as we reached the door to our maths class.
"Did the report say who it was?" I hadn't heard from all the guys this morning, what if it was one of them? They would've had every reason to be on our street last night. I sat down in my chair, if Gabby said any of their names I don't know what I'd do.
"No, not yet." I felt like I might be sick. It really could be anyone. I kept my phone under my desk and sent a quick message to Dex.
Have you heard from all the guys? It's important.
"I know you think I worry too much but I really don't like the idea of you being there alone." Gabby knew my parents weren't around, but she didn't know why. Nor did she know I had a brother. "You're staying at mine tonight." I went to protest, I really wanted to just go home and check everyone was ok, but she cut me off. "Please, just tonight." She was literally begging me, so I had to agree.

I was kind of out of it the rest of the day. I kept thinking about what had happened. Dex had replied saying everyone was fine, he'd seen the news too. But that didn't stop my overthinking kicking into high gear. If gangs were fighting, on our street no less, how did we not know about it? And which gangs was it? Was this a message from Tyson for Dex? Or was it nothing to do with us or him? I was still distracted when Gabby and I joined the queue for lunch. That was until I felt someone shove me out of the way so they could get passed. I looked up and saw Ashley standing there looking smug. "Oops, sorry didn't see you there." She said.
"Was that really necessary Ash?" Sebastian asked, appearing next to her. Ashley just shrugged and continued to cut in front of me and Gabby. "Sorry about her," Sebastian said to us before following her. In the three years I'd been at this school I'd never been noticed by Sebastian and his friends, but this was the third time in 2 days I'd bump into him.

After Gabby and I sat down at our usual table my phone rang. It was Colin.
C- Everything alright?
I lifted my head to see all five of them looking at me from their table.
K- Everything's fine, why?
C- Sebastian wasn't asking about last night, was he?
K- No, he was apologising for Ashley
C- Has she been bothering you?

I smiled at that message. It was when any of them asked questions like that, that I was reminded I didn't just have one brother anymore. I had nine.
K- She's just being her usual bitchy self
That seemed to be a good enough answer as he didn't respond.
"You ok?" Gabby asked.
"Yeah, just Hannah asking about our biology project." Here I go, lying again.

It wasn't till the end of school I remembered to message Dex to say I would be staying at Gabby's. Not that he'd really mind anyway, It was a Friday, so he'd be going out with the guys. It was always weird going to Gabby's house, I just felt so out of place. Her house was huge compared to mine and Dex's. "My parents won't be home tonight, so we can hang out in the living room." I nearly let out a sigh of relief when she said that. It wasn't that I didn't like Gabby's parents, they just always asked so many questions, ones I didn't have an answer to. Plus, after Gabby told them where I lived, I've noticed pity in their eyes whenever they see me.

Gabby opened the front door, and I could hear the sound of paws on her hallway floor. I didn't even get to take my shoes off before I was attacked by a ball of fluff. The best part of being at Gabby's had to be her golden retrievers. "Hey, I've missed you too." I greeted the excited dog in front of me. "Nacho, where's your brother? Hmm?" As if he understood my question, he walked into the kitchen where we found Mac lying in his bed. Mac let out a yawn as we entered the room.
"Has it been a long day?" Gabby asked him, patting him on the head.
"It's tough being that cute, y'know?"

We made ourselves comfortable in the living room, which was bigger than the entire ground floor of my house, with blankets, pillows as well as a full range of snacks and drinks. "So where are your mum and dad?" I asked as Gabby turned on the TV.
"Visiting Gran. She hasn't been feeling great."
"Oh, that's not good, I'm sorry."
"It's ok, she's doing ok now, but they decided to stay overnight just to be safe." I didn't ask any more. Gabby was really close to her Gran so not being with her when she was ill was probably upsetting for her. But someone had to stay at home to look after the two mischief makers currently lying at our feet. "Do you want to order pizza?" Gabby asked after we decided to watch '10 Things I Hate About You.
"Jeez Gab, I think we've got enough food."
"I know, but I'm really in the mood for pizza." I laughed.
"Ok, sure. Let's get pizza."

We'd moved to sitting on the floor, to make sure we didn't get the sofa covered in garlic dip when Gabby asked me a weird question. "Kloe, are you dating anyone." I nearly choked on my pizza.
"What? No. Why do you ask?"
"Well, it's just the emo kid from our English class," that'd be Colin, "kept looking over at us during lunch. And when I started to think about it, that whole crowd seemed to be watching us today. So, I just thought maybe something was going on between you and one of them." She explained.
"No, trust me. There's nothing going on. And even if there was, I would have told you." I assured her. "I know. But I just wanted to say that if you did like one of them, I wouldn't care. I know that there is something you're not telling me. I've known for a few years. But whatever it is you can trust me. I'm gonna be your friend no matter what." I just stared at her. If I didn't feel bad about lying to her before, I certainly did now.
"Thanks, Gabs," I said after a couple of minutes of silence. "I'll remember that." She just nodded and we went back to the movie.
