After slamming the door to the truck shut, I walked away. I heard Dexter roll down the window and drive forward enough to keep up with me. "Kira," I stopped and looked at him. "We'll be able to tell them soon, I promise." I didn't bother replying, I just started walking again. He's said that before and look where we are; having to get dropped off a block away from school so no one sees me, lying to my best friend about who I really am and not allowed to talk to the boys until we get home. Things were the same as they'd always been.
By the time I reached the school gates, Dexter was already there. I could feel the eyes of him and the others on me as I headed inside, not even sparing them a glance. It wasn't because I was really angry with him, well no more than I usually am, but more because it broke my heart not being able to speak to them here. If I don't look at them, it might hurt a little less.
"Kloe." I looked up from my locker as I heard Gabby call that name. It had taken a while to get used to answering to 'Kloe', but it was second nature now. "How, was your night?"
"It was ok. Didn't really do much, you?" I answered, grabbing the stuff I needed for our first class.
"Eh not too bad. I really wished you'd come 'round though."
"I wanted to, but I had studying to do." I hated lying to Gabby, but I didn't want her to be put in any danger, or to hate me.
"But I hate the idea of you being home alone, especially in that neighbourhood."
"It's ok. The doors are triple locked and it's not exactly a house someone is gonna try to rob." I told her, shutting my locker. I could tell from her face that she knew I was right, but that wasn't gonna stop her from worrying. "Come one, let's head to class." I linked my arm with hers and we headed down the hall.We hadn't even made it halfway to class when someone bumped into me. I went to apologise but stopped when I noticed who it was. "Watch where you're going, freak." Ashley Bardot everyone, designated drama queen of McKlaud High School. I tried my best to not scoff and roll my eyes at her, but I'm really not that strong-willed. "You did not just roll your eyes at me?" She took a, what I'm guessing she thought was intimidating, step towards me, but Sebastian pulled her back.
"Leave it, Ash." Sebastian was Ashley's supposed boyfriend. There were constant rumours about them going 'round the school; they'd broken up, one had cheated, and they were back together again. Sometimes I wondered if even they know what was true or rumour anymore. Ashley looked like she was about to throw a strop, but Sebastian spoke again. "It's a narrow hallway, people bump into each other all the time." I found it very hard to believe he was taking my side in this. Not only did he not know much about me, but no one ever stood up for me when I'm my 'nerd self', as Dex always calls it. Ashley huffed and stormed off down the hall. Sebastian gave me and Gabby an apologetic smile before walking away.
"Well, that was interesting," Gabby said. I nodded and we continued our walk to class. The rest of the day was just like any other, although I did receive more glares from Ashley and co than I usually would. Gabby and I were walking to her car at the end of the day when she asked the same question she always does. "You sure you don't want a ride?" I nodded.
"I'm sure."
"I don't like the idea of you walking alone in that part of town." Gabby was always warning me about the gangs near where I lived. The irony of it was, of course, lost on her.
"I'll be fine, I always am." I pointed out. "I'll message you when I'm home." She sighed as she closed her car door, knowing she wasn't gonna win this argument.
"You better." She said through her open window. We said goodbye and she drove off. I plugged in my headphones and started walking.I was too distracted by my music I didn't notice Dex's car until he peeped the horn. "You all right?" He asked as I got in the passenger seat. I checked the back to see if any of the others were there but found it empty. I nodded in response to his question and turned to look out the window, staying that way for the whole journey home.
Once he parked outside our small house, Dex turned to face me. "What's the matter? And don't say nothing is wrong, 'cause I know it's a lie. You haven't spoken to me at all" I was really tempted to just say 'nothing' to annoy him, but I knew this wasn't the time. "Kira."
"I'm sick of this, ok?" I snapped. Dex's surprised face showed he clearly wasn't expecting that response. "I know I say this at the beginning of every school year but Jesus Dex, it's been 3 years. Do you know what it's like to lie to your best friend every day for 3 years? I can't even complain to the guys because god forbid someone from school should see me talking to them." I sighed, resting my arm against the window, and looking away from him. "I don't even know why I've listened to your stupid rules for so long. You're not my dad."
"No, I'm not. I'm your brother and I'm just trying to protect you." I scoffed.
"I can look after myself." Instead of waiting for a reply I just got out of the truck and headed inside.I shut myself in my room, just lying curled up on my bed while staring at the wall. We had this argument after every summer break. I hated going from spending 6 weeks being who I really was and spending time with Dex and the guys to pretending to be someone who doesn't know them. Dex was right though; this was all to protect me. To protect both of us really. If one of Dex's enemies found out he had a sister, they could use us against each other. We'd do anything for one another and that could easily be a bad thing. Dex had other people counting on him, he couldn't constantly be worrying about my safety. I messaged Gabby, so at least one less person was concerned about me, before deciding to get homework out of the way.
It was a couple of hours later when there was a knock on my door. "I don't wanna talk Dex." Every time we had an argument Dex always left me to calm down, so I was surprised when the door opened.
"Well, I'm not Dex, so..." I didn't give him a chance to finish. I just ran over to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. "It's good to see you too Kira." He said as he put his big arms around my waist. One problem with only really having guys friends, they were all a lot taller and stronger than me.
"What are doing here, Greg?" I asked as I let go of him.
"Dex called saying you were upset so I came over." He answered. Greg, like the rest of the boys, was good friends with both me and Dex. Although, unlike the others, he was usually the one in the middle of a sibling spat.
"Aren't I always upset this time of year?" Greg just gave me a sad look. "I know what you're gonna say. It's for the best. Dex is just trying to do what's right. Blah blah blah."
"You're frustrated with the situation rather than angry at Dex, I get it. So, stop shutting him out Ki." I didn't answer him. I didn't need to. "Come on, Dex made your favourite for dinner.""You still mad at me?" Dex asked as Greg and I came down the stairs. I shook my head. Dex let out a sigh of relief. "Good. Dinner's ready." The three of us grabbed our plates and made ourselves comfortable on the sofas, the TV showing whatever rubbish Dex had been watching.
