"Jeffors, are you even listening?" David was chatting some nonsense in my ear, but my mind was elsewhere. I kept thinking about that girl from the boxing place the other night. We only made eye contact for a couple of seconds, and I didn't even speak to her but God she was beautiful. Part of me wanted to ask Sam to take me back there, but I knew it was unlikely I'd find her there again. The fact she was there at all means she's probably mixed up with some dodgy people. People like Dexter. That guy pissed me off, especially now I know he'd leave his friends to get beat up while he goes off with some girl. Some gorgeous girl.
"Sebastian!" Ashley's high-pitched voice rang through my ears like a bomb had gone off.
"What?" I asked her, did she have to be so loud?
"What's got you so distracted?"
"Nothing, doesn't matter," I said, I wasn't really gonna tell my kinda-girlfriend I was daydreaming of another girl. "What were we talking about?" The group of us had met up in the park since it was a relatively nice day.

Sometimes I did wonder why I hung out with this group. Why did they hang out with me? Easy, they know who my dad is. And they know how important it is for their rich mommies and daddies to be friends with someone like him. So, they play their roles of helpful children and make sure they have a good way into my family, through me. Even though we all know that ordinarily, they would rather not spend their free time with me. David was a slight exception. I did not doubt that he originally befriended me because of my dad, but over the years we had developed a semi-real friendship.

Ashley suddenly stood up and announced to the group that we were all going to hers to go in her pool. I really couldn't be bothered. I knew exactly what was going to happen; we'd all be having fun, then someone would bring out the booze and the drinking games would start, then at some point, Ashley would find an excuse to sit herself in my lap and try to make me get back with her. If we were even broken up at this point.

Three hours later there's Ashley, in her tiny red bikini, walking towards me. "Do you want me to bring you over another chair?" Someone asked. David, the other guys and I had been sitting around the unlit fire pit next to the pool. They'd been arguing who could finish their beer the quickest and multiple empty bottles lay at our feet.
"No it's ok. I've got the best seat in the house." Once she'd finished talking Ashley sat on my lap and made herself comfortable. "You don't mind, right?" The others all turned back to their own conversations. They were used to Ashley's forwardness by now. I tried to take a sip of my drink, but she kept moving her chest closer and closer to my face. The scraps of fabric that called itself a bikini top did not leave much to be exposed. Don't get me wrong Ashley was hot, and she knew it.
"Why don't we stop pretending?" She made a point of shuffling on me as she spoke. "We both know we are perfect together and I don't know why we keep fighting it." I did often wonder what planet Ahsley lived on. "Come on Seb." I could tell she was getting frustrated by my lack of response, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to say. Did I really want to keep going around in this circle with her? Could I be bothered with her drama if I said I didn't want to be with her? "Don't you want to be with me?" She had a worried look that she unsuccessfully tried to hide. I noticed our friends paying attention to us again. I would look like such a dick if I told her no, here in front of everyone.
"Of course I do Ash." She visibly relaxed and plastered a giant smile onto her face.

She spent the rest of the evening on me somehow. Sitting on my lap in the seats outside, laying practically on top of me when we moved inside as it got dark and wrapping herself around me like a koala when I tried to leave. "Ash, I gotta go home." My words were slightly muffled by her blonde hair which was trying its best to go into my mouth. I attempted to pry her off me, but she just clung to me tighter. The guys all gave me pitiful looks as they walked past, free to go whenever they wanted.
"You could just stay over, you know? It's not like it's a school night, plus my parents won't be home." She whispered into my ear. Most guys would've jumped at the idea of spending the night with Ashley. I just wanted to go home and watch rubbish. My social battery was completely drained, and Ashley was someone you needed to be mentally prepared to hang out with.
"I would, but you know my dad would be pissed if I didn't go home." Not entirely true but I didn't know how else to let her down gently. She finally let go and took a step back. She was clearly disappointed by my answer. "I'll ask about next weekend though." She perked up again.
"Yay!" Ashley re-attached herself to me, almost jumping with excitement.
"But I need to be in his good books before I ask, so I better go."
"Oh," She let go again. "You're right. I'll see you on Monday." She planted a kiss on my lips and stepped aside so I could leave. I said goodbye and started walking down the street.

It didn't take me long to walk from Ashely's house to mine. The richer families of this town all stuck together, less likely to let the unworthy sneak in that way. My mind went back to that mystery girl. Was she one of those my parents would deem problematic? Was she a rich girl? Or was she like me, from a rich family but not necessarily proud of it? If her parents were from around here, I doubt they would be happy she was spending her nights with a load of gangsters in an underground boxing ring. I had to remind myself that it didn't matter what part of town she was from I wasn't going to see her again. Also just because she was beautiful doesn't mean she wasn't as crazy and unhinged as the guys spending their time beating the shit out of each other.

I didn't bother shouting I was home once I shut the front door. Even if someone was in they wouldn't shout 'hello' back. The downstairs stood perfectly still as if it was a picture in a homeware catalogue. The couches had no wrinkles or creases as if they'd never been sat on. There were no cosy blankets or cushions to make the place look untidy. It wasn't till I was halfway up the stairs that I saw another sign of life. "Hey, Goose." I scooped up the white cat and carried him up the rest of the steps. He was purring like a revving engine and loving the attention by the time I reached the top.
"Where have you been?" The sudden presence of my father stopped me dead in my tracks. Goose wriggled slightly but stayed in my arms.
"With friends."
"Hmm." He was looking at a pile of papers in his hands, so I wasn't sure if that 'hmm' was directed at me or if he was thinking about the words in front of him. "Just make sure you treat that Bardot girl well. Her father is signing a contract with the company in a couple of months." He still didn't look up.
"Yes, father." He walked past me and down the stairs.
"And make sure that cat doesn't make a mess for our guests tomorrow."

I closed my bedroom door behind me and placed Goose on the carpet. He went over to his food bowl and ate like his life depended on it. We weren't allowed to show that people lived here, so having animal stuff out downstairs was unthinkable. "Only two years left Goose and then we're out of here." He gave a mirp of approval before joining me on the bed. I turned the TV on for some background noise and started scrolling through my phone. The people from my school posted a load of crap. I don't remember when I passed out but the last thing I saw was that mystery girl's face.
