Chapter 6 - Dex's POV - Warnings Only Matter When You're Sober

I woke up and noticed it was far too early to be awake when I wasn't going to school. "Sorry, did I wake you up?" I looked over at my bed at the sound of Greg's voice. After telling me about what Tyson did, I told Greg to stay over. He was in no condition to walk home, and I'd been drinking so couldn't drive him. However, it had taken me ages to convince him that he should be the one to sleep in the bed and I'd take the sofa bed.
"Nah it's ok." I saw he was playing some game on his phone, probably what he thought caused me to wake up. I thought about going back to sleep, but I heard Kira knocking on my door, telling me that she was leaving for school. "I hate you." She shouted.
"You love me really," I replied. I heard a small laugh come from my bed as Kira walked away.
"You two really are a pair," Greg muttered.
"A pair of what?" I asked.
"Idiots." I glared at him as he stood up. I could see the bruises on his stomach from being hit by Tyson's dogs.
"You ok?" I asked him. He looked confused for a minute before realising what I meant.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He replied as he picked his t-shirt up off the floor and put it on. I wasn't convinced he was telling the truth but decided to trust him anyway.
"Come on. I'll make some breakfast."

We were sitting on the sofa with our cereal when something on the TV caught my attention. I grabbed the remote and turned the volume up. The news reporter was talking about a stabbing that took place just up the road from here. "The victim has been identified as local high school student 17-year-old Tony Jacobs." A picture of Tony appeared next to the anchor man.
"Shit," Greg said dropping his spoon against the side of the bowl. "Who would kill Tony?" It was the same question that had been on my mind.
"I don't know," I admitted. "Why now though? He's been out of the game for almost a year."
"Maybe he got involved in another gang," Greg suggested.
"Come on man. You knew Tony just as well as I did. He has never wanted this life. I'm surprised he stayed for as long as he did." Greg nodded and we continued with breakfast.

Not five minutes later my phone buzzed, it was Kira.
Have you heard from all the guys? It's important.
"She must have seen the news too." Greg said as he glanced over at my phone.
"But she must not have heard who it was." If she had she wouldn't be asking if I'd heard from everyone. Plus, she definitely would have mentioned Tony if she knew.
"Are you going to tell her?" Greg's question was not an easy one to answer. Yes, she probably would want me to tell her but I wasn't sure it was the best call.

Around 11 pm I heard a car horn from outside. It was Tom here to pick us up. "So, where's Kira?" Collin asked as Greg, and I slid into the back seat next to him. Hank always liked to claim the front seat, not that anyone wanted to be stuck in the back seat with a guy that big anyway. Plus, he could snap us like twigs if we argued with him.
"She's staying at a friend's," I replied as Tom started driving away. It wasn't usual for Kira to stay at other people's houses so I was surprised when I had gotten her message earlier in the day. Although, she's mentioned before about her friend Gabby always worrying about how dangerous our neighbour hood is. Maybe Gabby had heard about the stabbing and convinced Kira to stay over.
"We should go pick her up," Hank suggested.
"And blow her cover?" Tom asked. "She'd probably kill you."
"Nah. She'd probably thank you," Greg muttered. We all knew what he meant. Kira made it very clear that she hated leading two lives and I hated making her do it. However, at the moment this is what is best. Especially if Tony's death was the start of something big.
"The others meeting us there?" I was trying to change the conversation.
"Yeah, Joe's driving them," Tom replied.

Tom parked the car and we all got out, walking towards the club at the other end of the street. As we neared the club, I suddenly remembered something. "Did you guys hear about Tony?"
"Yeah. It's a shame he was a good kid." Hank commented.
"He was only a year younger than you." Colin pointed out. "You can't call him a kid."
"I just don't understand why anyone would kill him," Greg said, ignoring Colin.
"Do you think it's some kind of warning?" Tom asked.
"What's a warning?" Lee asked, appearing out of nowhere, the other 3 behind him.
"What happened to Tony."
"Shit, yeah we heard about that earlier," Jackson said.
"What would it be a warning about and to who?" I asked.
"Most likely it's for you," Hank replied. Well, that just makes me feel shitty.
"Maybe it was just as the news said. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and we're all just overreacting." Mitch suggested, but even he didn't sound convinced.

We were almost there and feeling a little on edge about the previous conversation. "It's going to be weird, drinking without Kira," Tom said, quickly changing the subject.
"Yup, and she's going to be so mad when she finds out we went without her." Greg was right.
"At least she won't stop me from drinking and call me a child." We all laughed at Lee's comment, knowing it was exactly what she would do.

"Nice bruise by the way Greg, really suits you." Jackson joked as we found a booth to sit at.
"At least I don't look like Mitch." Greg shot back. Mitch glared at Greg. The others started laughing and joking, but I couldn't get what Tom said out of my head. Was this really a warning meant for me?
"Stop thinking about it," Greg told me as we sat in one of the booths with beers in our hands. I gave him a questioning look. "I know you're wondering if what the others said about it being a warning was true."
"You don't think Tyson was involved with what happened to Tony, do you?" I asked.
"Dex." He said giving me one of his looks. "Don't read too much into it. Not tonight anyway."
"But if someone is trying to send a message then what about Kira?"
"Kira will be fine. She's with someone no one knows and somewhere nobody would even think of looking for her. That's if they even knew about her."
"She could be the secret Tyson said he knows." I pointed out. "Or could it be-"
"Tyson is probably bluffing." I was about to argue when he put his hand up to cut me off again. "Shut up, stop thinking so much and finish that drink." I sighed, giving in. Greg wore a small smile as he watched me finish the beer in one go.
"Happy?" I asked, showing him the empty bottle.
"Yes. Now have another one." I rolled my eyes and stood up. "Get me one too, while you're there."

After finishing a few more drinks I found myself on the dance floor with a group of girls. One of them kept making eyes at me and dancing especially close. Usually, I'd play along but I just wasn't in the mood tonight. Once the song ended, I left to find the guys. It didn't take long as they were still sitting where I left them. "Not taking one of them home?" Hank asked when I sat down.
"Not interested."
"Well, I am. Excuse me." Tom said, squeezing passed Colin and heading to the dance floor. I noticed Lee trying to follow him.
"Don't even think about it." He huffed and sat down. I rolled my eyes, drinking from whoever's glass was in front of me.
"Hey, that's mine." Greg protested as I put the finished glass back on the table.
"Shut up, I probably bought it." Greg just shrugged his shoulders, not denying the statement.

A couple of hours later Joe was dropping me and Greg off at the house. Greg went inside first while I said goodbye to the others. "Make sure those two idiots get home ok," I told Joe, indicating to Colin and Lee, who were passed out in the back seat. Joe nodded, there was no doubt he would make sure they were ok before heading home.
"See you." He said before driving away. I watched until they drove round the corner and the car was no longer in sight, before making my way into the house.

I walked into the living room to find Greg sitting on one of the sofas. Hearing my footsteps, he stood up and came towards me. "Did you have a good night?" I asked as he took another step. He just shrugged.
"It was all right. Looked like you ended up having fun though." He answered in a low voice, moving even closer.
"I already told you that I wasn't interested in any of those girls."
"Who said anything about the girls? And why wouldn't you be interested?" I could tell he was about to go off on one, so I did the only thing I could think of to shut him up. Just as he opened his mouth to speak again, I grabbed the back of his head and pulled him towards me, locking my lips against his.
