It was completely unexpected when Porco popped the question to Rose one night in the shadow of a particularly heavy thunderstorm. The were both 18 and had decided to backpack around Marley the year after high school graduation. It wasn't ever something Rose had thought she'd do but she needed to get away from that lonely and imposing house on Reisswoods. It was cold and empty without her father or LaMarcus; she couldn't bear to be there on her own. Porco had come by one day and spontaneously convinced her to go backpacking on the mainland with him, just for a little while to clear her head. The two promptly boarded a plane and flew to Liberio, both of them submitting to Eldian database blood samples as authoritative Marleyan border security scrutinized their passports and documents.
Now the two teens had been gone for more than two months and planned to stay for another few weeks before traveling back to Liberio to fly back home to Paradis Island. The young couple had hiked and camped out through endless stretches of forests one minute and slept in urban youth hostels the next. It had always amazed Rose just how sprawled out the cities were on the mainland. She was so used to the bustling cities of Paradis Island but even they couldn't prepare her for the greater-metropolitan cities of Marley and Odiha.
The day the two had been sheltering in a barn they'd had come across while backpacking, both weary and bone-tired from days on their feet. The farmer had smiled at the two teens when they'd had begged to sleep in his barn for the night in exchange for some money. He had told them to keep the money; the barn was empty of animals for the day, and he'd be happy for the two young-ins to shelter there. He was even nice enough to provide a few blankets for them to make a bed for the night. Porco and Rose had laid the blankets on the large mountain of hay taking up the entirety of the barn, breathing in the air of rain approaching from the west. Rose had giggled as Porco grabbed an armful and threw it on her as she lay down for a moment of respite. She promptly threw some at him and the two screamed and giggled as they proceeded to roll in the hay before kissing passionately.
Rose had then gotten up and cleaned herself off, helping Porco to swipe the hay from every inch of his body and hair before he helped her in return. The two then sat down and helped themselves to the biscuits and soup the farmer had brought for them.
"Here, have the rest of this," Porco said, handing her his portion.
"What, don't you like it?" she giggled as she bit hungrily into her biscuit.
"I like it fine," he smiled as he rubbed his tummy. "But I'm stuffed."
"Well maybe we should get the recipe and make it back at my house," Rose teased as she playfully shoved him.
Porco smiled and looked outside. The barn had a wide opening between the two doors, and they could see the land sprawling out in rolling mounds all the way to the horizon. There were black storm clouds fast approaching, and they felt such a sense of relief that they had actual shelter for the night rather than the tent Porco lugged around in his backpack.
"I don't know if I want to go home," Porco muttered sadly. "I don't wanna go back and face my parents, they're furious with me for taking off like this. I don't want this to end, all I wanna do is be with you, Rose."
Rose looked over at him tenderly before putting her food aside and scooted next to him. She placed a kiss on his cheek and hugged him around his shoulders. "When I'm with you, I am home," she sighed contently.
Porco flushed bashfully, giving her arms a squeeze and turned his head to kiss her on the lips. He kissed her deeply and laid her down on their makeshift hay bed for the night. The two began touching one another and exploring each other's bodies before Porco aligned himself with Rose and slid inside her tentatively, just as a crack of thunder roared across the sky and the clouds released an absolute downpour.
