Angelina's eyes were glued to the television, her heart racing as shock washed over her like a cold wave. Tears streamed down her face as the horrifying news unfolded before her. Not so long ago, she had shared laughter and warmth with her sister and brother-in-law, and now they were gone—murdered. The images of their lifeless bodies flashed on the screen, so distorted and unrecognizable that it felt like a cruel nightmare.
Her sister had confided in her about Richard, her troubled nephew and how he had accepted the darkness ever since they welcomed Amy into their home. Deep down, Angelina had sensed the danger he posed. Evelina had warned her, had tried to make her see the truth, but now it was too late. The weight of that knowledge crushed her.
"Miss Angelina," a soft voice broke through her despair. It was Amy. In a panic, she turned off the television, hastily wiping her tears away, desperate to hide the turmoil within.
"Yes, sweetheart. What do you need?" she forced a smile, trying to mask her anguish.
The little girl, with her innocent gaze, noticed the redness around Angelina's eyes. "Are you okay?"
Angelina's heart twisted at the sight of Amy's concern. "Of course, my dear. I'm just fine," she lied, the words tasting bitter on her tongue.
"Can I call Mr and Mrs. Rumble? I miss them," Amy said, her lips forming a small pout that tugged at Angelina's heartstrings.
Gently, Angelina patted the girl's head, her heart breaking a little more. "They’re probably busy right now, but I’m sure they miss you just as much," she reassured, though doubt gnawed at her insides.
As Amy nodded and retreated to her new room, the weight of loss settled heavily on Angelina's shoulders. She had lost her sister in the most unimaginable way and the truth she had concealed from Amy loomed like a dark cloud. Richard was still out there, a lurking threat and the secrets that bound them all were growing, suffocating her with their weight.
