The phrase, "From the frying pan into the fire" came to mind as we came out of the gypsy room and were guided around a corner. Our tour guide led us into an anti-chamber of fake cave like construction and we circled up around her. She had us all in place when she dramatically put her hands in front of her back, and looked at us slowly one by one.
"We have reached one of the most haunted areas of the museum. We have arrived at the Dybbuk Box anti-chamber. Here lies one of the most haunted artifacts in the world. A movie has been based on it, and I have to say, I've had my run-ins with it too. It's definitely something not to mess with."
"How has it messed with you?" asked one of the guys that had been behind me and had now settled near the wall. His sneer of disbelief added to his comment.
The tour guide answered, "Something unseen slammed my head against the box when I was standing near it."
There was a gasp from the other side of her. She went on. "That was before the protective plexiglass was built around the box. It just had a plexiglass cover over the top of it then. You could get closer, and I made that mistake. Now, you can stay a safe distance away. I learned the hard way."
"Sure it did." The guy in the corner had his arms folded now.
"It's up to you, sir, to believe me or not. But there is video footage of other people passing out near it. It's not something to be fooled with. I don't go in the room anymore. I stay clear." She looked around at everyone again now. "But all of you are welcome to go in. If you don't wish to, you can exit the anti-chamber, and we'll meet in the hall by the exit door."
"So, it's enter at your own risk," asked someone else near me.
"Yes. Kind of like that." The tour guide answered. "Before you go in though, Zak has something to say as well." At that, the tour guide moved to the wall and pushed a button. A flat TV screen on the wall started to play a video in which Zak Bagans introduced the Dybbuk Box, one of the most haunted objects in the world. It mentioned the movie that tells its story, "The Possession", and the documented events leading up to Zak buying it. He talked about the story of how a Jewish Holocaust survivor imprisoned a Jewish Demon in a wine box. The Jewish inscriptions and layers of gold and lead to keep the demon in the box were put there by the builder of the box. It talks about how a previous owner bought it to give to his mother, that had a heart attack after receiving it. It was sold and then buried by the new owner for five years to keep others safe. Then, it was sold to Zak.
Zak continues on mentioning the curse with Post Malone, that touched the box visiting Zak, and then had extremely bad luck with a robbery to his home and an accident. He then warns those that if you wish to exit and not view the box to meet in the hall, ending with an ominous warning to enter at your own risk."
The video ends, and the tour guide opens the door to the Dybbuk Box room. The guy that had been doubtful went into the room first, arms crossed. Others began to follow in. I turn to Shelley and ask her, "So, you going in?"
"It's what I came here to do. Face the Dybbuk Box."
"Really, why?"
She looked around her and whispered back to me. "I've visited another time, and had the worst luck after. I've come back to tell it to leave me alone. I really thinks it feeds off you. Fear. It feeds off your fear. So, don't be afraid."
I shook my head. "Okay. I'll go in. I think it would be bad to show any fear."
"Exactly. Some things feed off fear. This is one of them."
We grabbed hands, and moved through the door together. It felt like we were facing a great force. When we came through, people seemed to be walking around the large room, still made up to be like an old cave. There seemed to be an altar like to the side where I saw people leaving objects. The box itself just looked like an old double doored, wooden box with two grape bunches on the front. It was surrounded by a plexiglass outer shield that didn't allow you to get close, keeping a distance of a few feet around it. Inside around the box, I could see white sage sprinkled.
Shelley stood in front of the box for awhile. She glared at it, as if in a trance. Then, she shook herself and started walking around counterclockwise. I followed her slowly. We walked around the Dybbuk Box, and I could see the jewish writing inscribed on the back.
When we got near the farthest side, I felt a breeze near me. Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a dark figure, like a shadow man, standing in the corner. It couldn't be a person, since no one was there. People had moved through that area and were starting to leave. I decided, maybe, it was a good idea to do that too. I'd had enough of the Dybukk Box. I finished walking around the box, and left through the door on the side, where I found everyone waiting from our group.
Our tour guide waited for a few more people to come out of the Dybbuk Box Room. When it seemed everyone was there, she told the whole group, "And now, it's time to visit Peggy."
