Alice was wiping down a table in the dimer she worked in when the bell rang as the door opened.
She looked up to see Bucky and smiled. "Hi." She studied his expression. "Is everything all right?"
"Did you hear the news or see the paper?" he asked.
"No, I've been busy. What's going on?"
"We're at war."
She laughed. "You're kidding, right?"
He slapped the paper down in front of her. "Does that look like I'm kidding?"
Alice read the paper, then looked at Bucky. "So what does this mean? Are you going to fight?"
"I sure as hell hope not. But Alice, I'm scared they'll draft me."
Alice faced him, set the rag down, and took his hands. "Bucky, I hope you're not, but if you are, Steve and I'll wait for you however long it takes."
He pressed a soft kiss to her temple, then said, "I know. I'll try my hardest to get back to you as soon as I can."
She hugged him, closing her eyes. "I'll be counting down the days, Buck."
"As will I, darling."
