Four-year-old Alice pulled her hand away from her mother's and went to look at children's books.
As she browsed for something that seemed interesting, she noticed someone next to her. It was a boy who didn't seem much older than herself.
"I'm Alice," the little girl said.
"Bucky," the boy replied.
"Bucky's a funny name."
"It's not my real full name."
"Oh. It's still funny. What's your real full name?"
"James."
"I like Bucky better."
"Me too. Are you alone here?"
"No, my mommy's looking at love books. I got bored."
"My mom's looking at cooking books."
"Cooking books are super boring."
"Yeah. Are you gonna get a book?"
She nodded and picked up a book about a princess and dragons. "This one."
"That's a girl's book."
Alice frowned at him. "I'm a girl, dummie!" She went to hit him with the book.
Agnes rushed up and pulled her daughter away. "We don't hit people, Alice. Especially not with library books."
Alice smiled sweetly. "Can we get this book?"
"Apologize to him first."
Alice turned to Bucky. "Sorry for almost hitting you."
"It's okay," Bucky said.
"I 'pologized. Can we get this book now?"
Agnes nodded. "Sure, sweetie." She turned to Bucky. "Where's your mother?"
Bucky pointed across the way. "Right there. Bye, Alice."
Alice waved back. "Bye, Bucky." She skipped to the check-out desk. Agnes followed her daughter and checked the books out.
Alice glanced back and waved at Bucky who waved back.
Little did the two know it was the start of something far greater than either knew.
