"Earth to Dee......Dee, Deirdra!" I heard Monica shout my name causing me to almost jump out of my skin.
"Girl, I've been calling your name for the past five minutes and you are just staring at nothing as if your mind is nowhere here. What's going on with you? You are yet to tell me how your first day at work was." I just nodded at her and smiled.
"Deirdra Lewis, what is going on with you?" She asked moving closer to me on the bed.
I don't when or how long I arrived at her house. Everything that has happened today seems like a blur to me. My mind is all over the place. I feel as if something has changed in my life but for some reason, I just can't place a finger on it. Nothing seems to make sense to me; I don't even remember what day it is.
Looking over at Monica, I smiled and stood up from the bed.
"I think we should go out tonight."
She looked at me as if I grew an extra head then placed the back of her hand against my forehead.
"I knew it! Girl you have a fever and it's messing with your head. No wonder you've been out of it since you came here. But no worries, I got you. I'm going to nurse you back to health. " She let out then stood up too. Placing her hands on my shoulder, she gently pushed me on the bed.
"Why don't you lay down and I'll go make you something for you to feel better."
With that she left the room, the smile has yet to leave my lips.
Feeling myself waking up from a nap I had no idea when it came on me. I rose from the bed I was in and looked around the room. Seeing Monica sitting at the edge of the bed with her head in her hands and the sound of sobs leaving her reached my ears.
"Mo? What's wrong?" I asked moving closer to her and placing my hand on her back.
She turned her body to look at me. Her face was covered in tears, with snot running down her nose and her eyes were blood red. My mind started racing. What if someone died? Or is about to die?
"Come on, Mo. Tell me what's going on. Why are you crying?" I pleaded with her.
Looking over my face and then down my body she shook her head vigorously.
"Plea... Please don't tell me that what I thinking has happened to you." I looked at her confused as to what she was talking about.
"Wha-"
"Were you raped Dee?"
A loud boisterous laugh escaped my lips as I laid back on the bed and held my stomach. As I felt my breath coming short I tried to calm myself down and got off the bed and stood in front of her. Wiping the tears that fell from my eyes due to how hard I was laughing, I looked at my best friend.
"Okay Monica, I think you have definitely gone crazy. What are you talking about?"
She stood with me and gave me a look that told me she was serious about her claims.
"When was your last period Dee?"
"Uhm, last week. Why are you asking?" I asked her confused as to where this was going.
"I thought as much." She spoke, then held my forearm and pulled me towards the mirror with my back turning to it.
"There is blood on your dress Dee. And I thought I was going crazy, because I knew you just had your period and won't be seeing it for another two to three weeks. So when I came back from preparing some soup and saw you laying on your stomach, the first thing that cause my eyes was that spot. After contemplating for a while, I remember how you were slightly limping when you came in. Your mind was far from here and you barely spoke a word to me. And the first words you spoke were you suggesting us going the club. Then this stupid fever, you are clearly in shock about something Dee. Please tell me what happened."
She glared hopefully at me. But I was even more confused as to what she wanted me to say. I was raped? When? I don't remember anything of such happening today. I just went to work and left afterwards.
"Could you please stop. I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm fine, okay? If something like that happened I'm sure I'd remember it. Maybe this is just some after bleeding or something. Let's just forget about whatever crazy thoughts are going through your head. If you don't wanna go out, we could just stay in and watch a movie or something."
Our conversation was cut short due to the ringing of Mo's phone. She wiped her face with a sigh and answered it.
"Hello?"
"........"
"Yes she is right here with me."
"..........."
"Uhm... Right. I'll let her know." She hanged up then turned to me.
"That was your boss and apparently you left work abruptly with no prior notice, also she's been trying to reach your phone to no avail. Is there any particular reason you left the job you just got with informing your employer?"
I shook my head at her. Me leaving work early was a surprise to me. I thought the day was over.....
Okay this day is getting more and more weirder.
Monica decided she was no longer going to ask me anymore questions. She gave me a change of clothes and forced me to change and follow her to somewhere, I have no idea where. After I took off my clothes she hurriedly took it from me and walked in the closet only to come out with a bag.
"Come on, let's go." She spoke after I got dressed, taking up her keys and handbag then exited the room.
I followed behind her aimlessly.
After driving for about fifteen minutes, she pulled into the parking lot of a hospital.
"What are we doing here?" I asked looking at her confused.
"I know you said you are okay, but I beg to differ. You are just going to do a checkup and if the doctor confirms you are fine, I'll leave you alone." With that she got out of the car and walked to my side to open the door for me.
"Deirdra Lewis?" The nurse called out causing Monica to immediately stand from her seat.
"Do you want me to come with you?"
I only nodded in response. She smiled and held out her hand for me to take. Giving me a soft squeeze she pulled me into a hug then followed the nurse as she led us to the examination room.
