Calista: 6
Alessandro: 20

Cali could remember the day her parents died as if it were yesterday.

The breeze felt cool against her skin, and the air smelled of the sea-her favorite scent. The weather was perfect, unlike the past few days of rain and thunderstorms. It felt as if the whole world was joyful, just like the six-year-old girl.

That morning, she woke up full of excitement, not even waiting for her brother to rouse her or grumbling for "just five more minutes." Her parents had been away on a business trip for a week, and today they were finally coming home!

She practically skipped to the bathroom to brush her teeth, then to the wardrobe to pull out the new dress her brother had given her for her sixth birthday. It was a white dress with blue flowers scattered across it-her favorite.

After putting it on and brushing her hair, she ran to the door, only to collide with her big brother, Alessandro, whom she loved to call "Andro."

"Whoa there, Beanut," he chuckled, steadying her with a hand on her shoulder. "Where are you off to, all dressed up so early?"

"It's not early," she said, feigning annoyance as she swatted his hand. "It's eight in the morning!"

Andro raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "That's not what you said two days ago when I tried to wake you up for school."

"Well, that was 'Grumpy C.' But today, I'm 'Happy C!'" she declared proudly, bouncing on her toes.

He laughed. "What's got you so happy?"

Cali gasped, looking at him as if he had committed the ultimate betrayal. "Momma and Papa are coming home today! How could you forget?"

She stood there, hands on her hips, looking like an angry kitten with her eyebrows furrowed and a cute little pout on her face.

"Oh, that's today?" he asked, glancing at his watch.

"Yeah!" she said, exasperated, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"I'm so sorry, Beanut. Dad left me with so much work, I-"

"Yeah, yeah, c'mon! We've got to make breakfast. They'll be here in an hour!" she interrupted, practically vibrating with excitement as she darted down the stairs toward the kitchen.

"I guess we're making breakfast," he sighed, staring after her. "No running down the stairs!" he called after her.

---

By 9:30, Andro and Cali sat in the kitchen, waiting patiently for their parents. The breakfast they had made together had gone cold.

Andro glanced at his watch and sighed. He turned to look at his little sister, who sat with her eyes on the floor, a pout tugging at her lips.

"Hey, Beanut, do you want to watch TV while I take care of something real quick in Dad's office?" he asked gently, brushing a hand through her hair.

She shook her head. "Mom hates when I watch TV. I'm gonna wait for them in the garden," she said, trying to lift her spirits. Her parents were coming!

---

Cali loved the garden. It was her favorite place in the house-the quiet, the fresh air, the soft breeze that played with her hair and tickled her freckled face. She always felt at peace there.

She sat down on the grass, playing with it to distract herself, pulling at blades absentmindedly. Time seemed to pass slowly as she waited.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. She whipped her head around, a big smile spreading across her face as she expected to see her parents' white car.

But her smile slowly fell as she saw Sheriff Peterkin's car instead. The sheriff stepped out and started walking toward her.

Cali tried to force a smile to hide her disappointment, not wanting to seem rude. "Hi, Sheriff."

"Hey, Cali," the sheriff said softly, a small, tight smile on her face. "Can you get me Andro, please?"

Cali nodded and was about to turn around to call for her brother when she saw him already stepping out of the house, his eyebrows knit together in concern.

"Is everything okay?" Andro asked as he stopped beside his sister, his eyes shifting between the sheriff and her car. It wasn't unusual to see Sheriff Peterkin at their house, but never in her police car.

The sheriff gave a sympathetic nod toward Cali, and in a gentle tone, she asked Andro, "Can I talk to you for a moment?"

A deeper frown creased his face as he walked a little distance away with the sheriff.

Cali sat back down, resuming what she had been doing before the interruption. She didn't think much of it-after all, her parents often spoke with the sheriff.

But then she glanced back at her brother. He stood frozen, his body stiff, staring at Sheriff Peterkin with a horrified expression.

When he finally turned to look at his little sister, tears were streaming down his face.

It was the first time she had ever seen him cry-and the last.
