the best tutor ever

That Wednesday, Chaewon, Yunjin, and Eunchae meet again at the library. Yunjin's suspension has only made her more popular, and rumors spread quickly around the school of why neither she nor Hajoon has returned. Chaewon's favorite was a freshman girl who claimed that Yunjin witnessed her getting dress-coded and executed a martial-arts style flying kick on the offending teacher before reassuring the girl that she looked beautiful and asking her out. It's less amusing now, with so many eyes on her as she sits in the library with Yunjin by her side.

Chaewon does her best to ignore their audience and get started, and things go well at the beginning. Eunchae is much more enthusiastic than the week before, Yunjin is her usual dopey self, and Chaewon starts to relax as time goes on without any disasters. It's when she begins to let her guard down that a girl decides to approach them, closing in on Yunjin with sparkling eyes.

"Aw, Yunny, what happened?" She coos, trailing her fingertips along the skin below Yunjin's cut, "Is it true that you fought off a bear?"

Yunjin blinks, "Um, yeah. It was really scary."

The girl laughs, leaning into Yunjin who gives her a bewildered smile.

"Show me how you did it," she says.

Yunjin gets up to demonstrate her bear fighting skills, but Chaewon grabs her arm, "Yunjin, we're in a library."

"Oh yeah," Yunjin sits back down, awkwardly scooting in her chair, "Sorry, Jia."

The girl, Jia, rolls her eyes, "Instead of hanging out with Miss Librarian here, why don't we go somewhere we're allowed to have a good time."

Yunjin shakes her head, "I'm good here. You have fun though."

"Come on, Yunny," Jia's hands move to Yunjin's arms, massaging the muscles there, "I bet you need to relax a little after the weekend you had."

"I said I'm good here," Yunjin repeats, shifting away from Jia's touch.

Sore from Yunjin's rejection, Jia turns toward Chaewon. "You know, it's no secret what you did to get her so devoted to you," she says coolly, "We've all heard how you give it up easy." She starts to leave, but Yunjin stands up, slamming her hands on the table so loudly she earns herself a shush from the actual librarian.

"Sorry," Yunjin mutters to the librarian before turning back to Jia. "Say one more thing about her I fucking dare you," she whispers.

Chaewon holds in a laugh at the ASMR-style threat, but it seems to work and Jia steps backwards, caught off-guard by Yunjin's sudden anger. Chaewon wraps her hand around Yunjin's wrist, digging her nails into the skin and tugging her down while Eunchae watches the standoff with wide eyes, her math homework completely forgotten.

"Yunjin," Chaewon hisses, "Stop it."

"Whatever," Jia leaves with a huff and Yunjin allows Chaewon to pull her back down into her seat. Chaewon does her best to continue the lesson, but Eunchae keeps interrupting with questions.

"Who was that?"

"What was she talking about?"

"Did you really fight a bear?"

"Eunchae," Chaewon sighs, "How about this: If you finish your work early, Yunjin will show you her bear-fighting skills outside. How does that sound?"

"Awesome," Eunchae grins, "You're the best tutor ever." Her eyes dart towards Yunjin, "I mean, um, friend."

"It's okay," says Yunjin, "ChaeChae's my tutor, too."

"Really?"

Yunjin nods proudly, "She's the best there is."
