tiebreaker

"How about we just rock paper scissors it?" Yena suggests.

Chaewon puts her head in her hands. She'd asked Yena, the school vice president, to stay late after their SGA meeting to make the final decision regarding the prom theme. Little did she know what a mistake that would turn out to be. There were only two options left on the whiteboard: Chaewon's pick, "Once Uprom a Time'' fairytale theme, and Yena's pick, "James Promd''. And no, they're not going to 'rock paper scissors it' because Chaewon considers herself a good president and a good president doesn't concede to a theme like James Promd.

"Come on," Yena whines, "Are you even going to go to prom?"

"No," says Chaewon, "But I know what the people want. On prom night girls want to feel like princesses, not Pussy Galore cosplayers."

"The girls could go as James Bond, too," says Yena, "Oh my god and people could talk to their dates using walkie-talkies. And the DJ could be like, 'Shake it, don't stir it!'"

Chaewon groans, "Yena, that's horrible."

"It's genius," Yena argues, "You're just jealous you didn't come up with it first."

Before Chaewon can respond, a knock on the door interrupts her. She opens it to reveal none other than Huh Yunjin, wearing her stupid blue jacket and spinning her car keys around her abnormally long fingers.

Chaewon stands and stares at her for a moment before coming to her senses, "I'm sorry, there's an SGA meeting happening right now so you can't use this room." She attempts to close the door on Yunjin but the younger girl easily holds it open.

"Relax, ChaeChae," she says, "I'm here to pick her up." She gestures toward Yena who is smoothing down her hair.

"We have a date," Yena says proudly.

Chaewon puts on a fake smile, "Sorry, Yena's not available. Our meeting is going long so you'll have to reschedule. Or, heck, why not just cancel?"

She moves to close the door again but Yena stands up, "No, wait, I'm available. How about we just let Yunjin be the tiebreaker?"

Chaewon clenches her jaw. Yena knows what she's doing. It's obvious that Yunjin is exactly the kind of dunce who would think James Promd is sheer brilliance. But Chaewon isn't afraid to play dirty, especially not when it comes to her presidential duties.

She ignores Yena's ranting about trilby hats and martini-glass mocktails and focuses on Yunjin, batting her eyelashes and giving her a shy smile. If Yunjin ever thought about anything for more than a few seconds, she'd realize that Chaewon was putting on an act. She has never been the eyelash-batting type. But it's Yunjin, and she doesn't, so instead she flushes red and starts fiddling with the sleeve of her jacket.

"Yunjinnie," Chaewon says sweetly, "Tell your girlfriend that the fairytale theme is better."

"She's not my girlfriend," Yunjin says quickly, glancing from Yena back to Chaewon, "But yeah, I think fairytale is pretty cool."

"Are you kidding me?" Yena stares at her, dumbfounded, "You told me you love James Bond."

"I do," Yunjin admits, "But I love fairy tales, um, more."

"Okay, fine," Yena throws up her hands, "Fairy tale it is."

Chaewon claps her hands in celebration. Prom is saved, and now it's time to focus on the task at hand. She turns to Yunjin with a smile, a genuine one this time, "Can you give me and Yena a minute? I need to talk to her about something. In private."

"She just wants to rub it in my face that she won," Yena grumbles.

"No she doesn't," says Yunjin, "ChaeChae's not like that. She's-"

"Yunjin, it's fine," Chaewon assures her "Just step outside for a second, please." Yunjin nods, closing the door as she steps out, and Chaewon turns to Yena.

"What are you doing?" She whispers, worried Yunjin may be listening through the door, "Haven't you heard about her?"

"What, you mean that she's a fuckboy?" Yena smirks, "I mean, girl." Chaewon nods frantically and Yena laughs, "I don't care what she is. She's cute."

"And what happens when she runs off and leaves you to take the bus home?" Chaewon demands, "Is that cute to you?"

"She wouldn't do that to me. She cares about me," says Yena.

Chaewon leans back in her chair. 'No she doesn't ' isn't really an acceptable response here, however true it may be. Moreover, Chaewon is beginning to think that maybe she shouldn't be talking. To be honest, Chaewon wouldn't believe that Yunjin would disappear on her either. She's too easy to trust. Her face is too innocent, her puppy eyes and her earnest smile that make you start to doubt everything you've heard. Maybe, Chaewon thinks, that's why Yunjin has such an easy time getting whatever girl she wants despite her awful reputation. She's too good at making you feel like you're the exception, like you're the one she really does care about. And maybe Chaewon isn't as immune to it as she thought she was.

Chaewon watches Yena for a moment, the girl's nervous smile and fluttering hands telling her that she may already be too far gone.
"I hope you have a good time," Chaewon says quietly.

Yena smiles and gets up to leave, Yunjin waiting obediently outside the door. While Yena walks away, Yunjin stays behind and pokes her head into the room where Chaewon is lost in apprehension.

"ChaeChae," Yunjin calls. There she goes again with her bright eyes. Her lopsided smile. Her conwoman tricks. "Are you coming to the game today?"

Chaewon hadn't planned to, but doing what she's planned hasn't really been working out for her lately. She makes a split-second decision, "Yeah. Yeah, I'll be there."

"Awesome," Yunjin grins, "We'll win for you, then."

Chaewon makes a face. "Don't win for me. Win for her," She gestures to where Yena has disappeared into the hallway.

"Right, that too," Yunjin nods, "I'll see you there, ChaeChae."

"Wait, Yunjin," Chaewon says before Yunjin can leave, "Please don't break her heart."

Yunjin stares at her for a second, keys clutched tightly in her hand, her expression unreadable. "I won't," She says, and lets the door close, leaving Chaewon alone in the meeting room.

Without a moment's reflection, Chaewon takes out her phone and texts Sakura before she has the chance to lose her nerve.
