The next day is another long day without Yunjin in school and Chaewon finds herself staring out the window in Ms. Park's class, missing all of her usual militant note-taking. For once, she actually misses the incessant noise of Yunjin behind her. Her mind drifts to the younger girl stuck at home in bed, wondering what she is doing. Wondering if she's thinking of Chaewon. Wondering if Yunjin has noticed that it's seventh period now, that they should be together now. It's ridiculous. Chaewon knows her education is the most important thing, knows that daydreaming is not going to win her the future she dreams of, and yet all her mind can focus on is Yunjin's soft skin and hair, her dopey smile as she drifts in and out of sleep five miles way. Is this what a crush is? Chaewon wonders. Or is this something worse? Is she in far more trouble than a simple crush?
That afternoon isn't the first time that she's let herself into Sakura's house unannounced. After all, Sakura gave her an emergency key for a reason, and being possibly in you-know-what with Yunjin is pretty much an emergency in Chaewon's opinion. It is however, the first time Chaewon has invited herself up to Sakura's bedroom and found that she isn't the only guest. Sakura and Kazuha are so busy swapping spit that they don't even notice Chaewon come in. Chaewon shrieks, covering her eyes, and the two girls jump apart in surprise.
"Jeez," Sakura breathes, "Don't scare me like that."
"You know most people lock the door first," says Chaewon, flopping down onto the floor since her spot on the bed is now occupied.
"You know most people text before they show up at your house," Sakura shoots back.
"Aw, come on," Kazuha leans back, wrapping an arm lazily around Sakura's shoulders, "It's nothing you haven't done in the past 24 hours."
Sakura raises her eyebrows, "Is that so?"
Chaewon hides her face in her hands and Kazuha laughs, "She hasn't told you? Yunny won't shut up about how she tastes like cotton candy and pixie dust and sweet angel's-"
"Please stop," Chaewon says from behind her hands.
"You kissed Huh Yunjin?" Sakura squeals.
"You're so behind," Kazuha teases, "Real purinz shippers know this isn't even their first kiss."
Chaewon groans, "Please, not the ship name."
"I can't believe you kissed Huh Yunjin and didn't even tell me," Sakura turns to her friend, "What happened to 'not even if I was dying'?"
"I don't know," Chaewon huffs, "I just...she's very...we just kissed, okay?"
Sakura laughs, tossing a pillow at the still-hiding Chaewon, "Don't get shy now, give us the details."
"Yeah, how's Yunny's technique?" says Kazuha, "Did she shove her tongue down your throat?"
"Oh my God, did she bite you?" says Sakura, "I bet she bit you and said you awakened her inner wolf."
"There was no tongue and no biting," Chaewon protests, "It wasn't like that. It was just...just gentle and sweet."
"Gentle and sweet?" Kazuha repeats, "Those are, like, the last words I'd used to describe Yunny."
"Well, that's how it was," Chaewon insists.
Kazuha sighs, "It's probably those horse tranquilizers they put her on. Kept her from letting out the dog in her."
Sakura makes a face, "Never say those words again."
"I don't get it," says Kazuha, ignoring the scolding, "Who the fuck would want to beat Yunny up? The only person I can think of is Hajoon, but he has the strength of a newborn baby. No way he broke her ribs. And why the fuck is she being all secretive?" Kazuha turns to Chaewon, "You have to be the one to ask her. Just make a cute face and ask like you're worried about her, she won't be able to resist you."
Chaewon glances from Kazuha to Sakura and Sakura's eyes widen.
"You already know," Sakura says.
Chaewon nods, "I was there when it happened. I mean, not for the breaking ribs part, but I saw them waiting for her."
"Them?" Kazuha repeats, "Hajoon brought a buddy?"
Chaewon bites her lip. Technically, Yunjin can't get in trouble if Chaewon is the one talking about it, right? She sighs, "It was Hajoon's older brothers. I guess he sent them to get revenge, or something."
"Ugh, I should've known," Kazuha shakes her head, "Of course that pussy would send his brothers. Why did they even fight in the first place? They were best buddies one day, then the next day she fucking destroyed his face. I can't imagine what it would have taken for her to turn on him like that."
"She was there for that one, too," says Sakura.
"You were?" Kazuha looks up, "Damn, why do you get a front seat to these things?"
"It wasn't so great to watch," says Chaewon.
"So what was it? Why'd Yunny lose her shit on him?"
"Hajoon, um," Chaewon swallows, "He was saying some...some things...about me."
"Yeah, that'll do it," Kazuha slumps back onto the bed, "Damn, he's even dumber than I thought. All the guys know Yunny doesn't play about you. What the fuck did he expect to happen?"
Chaewon blushes. She'd always found it annoying when guys would try to play hero and come to her defense. But when it's Yunjin...
"I still don't get it," Kazuha continues, "Yunny beats Hajoon up and gets kicked off the team, but Hajoon sends his brothers after her and that's okay? He gets to keep playing? That's such bullshit."
Chaewon nods, "I told Yunjin she should report what happened but she's too proud. 'Snitches get stitches' or whatever."
"That's bullshit, too," says Kazuha.
"Trust me, I agree," says Chaewon, "But you know how she is. She's hard to convince."
"If you couldn't convince her I definitely can't," Kazuha frowns, "What if we don't ask Yunny's permission? We just go report it ourselves?"
"I'm in," says Sakura, "Hajoon needs to get what's coming to him."
Chaewon bites her lip. "I'm all for punishing Hajoon," she says slowly, "But wouldn't it be better if we could help Yunjin? Like, if we could find a way to get her back on the team?" She straightens up as the plan starts to formulate, "Like, an intervention, maybe. I've been helping Yunjin with her schoolwork a little and her grades are going up. What if we collect evidence that she's turning over a new leaf and we present it all to Mr. Kwon. Maybe he'll let her back on the team!" She looks excited from Sakura to Kazuha, who are staring back at her with slightly less enthusiasm.
"I mean, it's a long shot," Kazuha finally says, "But it's still a shot. I say we go for it."
"Chaewonnie's the school president," Sakura points out, "If anyone can pull this off, it's her."
"In that case," Kazuha holds her fist out into the air, "Let's save Yunny."
"Let's save Yunny," Sakura copies with her own fist.
Beaming, Chaewon joins them, "Let's save Yunny!"
