the party

Chaewon stumbles through the endless maze of rooms, searching for Hajoon and praying he isn't too drunk to be her ride home. She's had a little more to drink than she'd planned to, and she's starting to feel a little nauseous as she pushes her way through the crowd. When she spots Yena pulling on her coat near the entryway, she rushes over, relieved to see a familiar face.

"Are you heading out?" Chaewon asks, "Can you give me a ride?" She falters when Yena turns around with a scowl.

"Not tonight," Yena says hoarsely.

Chaewon steps closer to her, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Yena snaps.

"Did I do something wrong?"

Yena groans, "I just can't give you a ride, okay?"

"Is it Yunjin?" Chaewon guesses, "What did she do this time?"

Yena gives her a look and Chaewon notices the dark marks on her neck, the places where her lipstick is smudged. "She called me the wrong name," Yena mutters.

"That asshole," Chaewon breathes, "I swear to God I'm going to-"

"Just stay out of it, Chaewon," Yena interrupts, "You've done enough."

Yena moves to leave but Chaewon grabs her wrist, "Yena, wait, I don't- Is this about the SGA meeting?"

"No," Yena yanks herself free from Chaewon's grip, "It's nothing. Just let it go."

"No, please," Chaewon persists, "What did I do?"

"You didn't do anything," Yena shakes her head, "Of course you didn't. You're perfect, aren't you? How could anyone else measure up?"

"Yena, what are you talking about?"

"Just forget about it, okay? I can't deal with you right now." Yena leaves, slamming Kazuha's door behind her, and Chaewon watches her go. Even more disoriented after the sudden argument, Chaewon hurries to the stairs and goes up to the second floor. Yunjin is behind the first door she tries, sitting on the bed with her head in her hands. She startles when Chaewon opens the door.

"Chaewon," Her eyes widen, "Did Yena tell you...?"

Chaewon nods. Yunjin's hair is a mess, lips pink and puffy, face flushed and her disarming appearance only makes Chaewon more angry. Everything would be so much easier if Yunjin weren't so pretty.

"I'm really sorry," says Yunjin, "I-I've had too much to drink. I don't even know what I was-"

"I know what you're doing, Huh Yunjin," Chaewon interrupts, jabbing a finger into Yunjin's chest, "You're trying to fuck up my life because I won't go out with you. That's low, even for you."

"What?" Yunjin shakes her head vehemently, "No, I would never-"

"You're trying to use your little heartbreaking streak to sabotage me," Chaewon continues, "First you fuck with my star mathlete, now you're turning my vice president against me, next you're probably going to try to seduce Ms. Park so you can ruin my English grade."

"Your star mathlete?" Yunjin repeats, "What are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb," Chaewon sneers, "You know exactly who I mean. Or do you expect me to believe that you've been with so many girls this week that you don't even remember who it was on Monday?"

Yunjin rubs her forehead, "You mean Yuri?"

"Yes, I fucking mean Yuri," it takes all of Chaewon's energy to keep herself from slapping the younger girl, "You have a lot of nerve, Yunjin, you know that?"

"I-I know I should call Yuri back but I didn't even know she was on mathletes, I swear," says Yunjin, "I would never try to mess things up for you on purpose."

"You really expect me to think that it's just a coincidence that you've fucked up my team and my cabinet in the same week?"

"Cabinet?" Yunjin frowns, "I didn't touch any-"

"I mean the executive team," Chaewon snaps, "God, you're stupid."

"It's not what you think. I wasn't trying to get any kind of revenge on you," Yunjin insists, "Please, Chaewon, you have to believe me."

"I don't have to believe anything," says Chaewon. Yunjin looks at her with desperate, pleading eyes and guilt claws at her insides. She sighs, "Fine. Enlighten me. Why is it that you keep fucking with my friends coincidentally right after I turned you down?"

"It's not because they're your friends, it's..." Yunjin stares at her hands, her voice going quiet, "It's because they look like you."

Chaewon stares at her for a moment while the words register.

"You are so fucked up." She backs away from Yunjin, stumbling a little as she grabs for the doorknob. Yunjin doesn't respond, just holds her head in her hands as Chaewon staggers out.

Chaewon flees down the steps in such a hurry that she nearly slams into Hajoon at the bottom of the staircase. He catches her with an arm around her waist.

"Oh, jeez, Chaewon," says Hajoon, helping her steady herself, "I was just looking for you. I thought maybe you left without me." He frowns, "You weren't up there with Yunny, were you?"

"No," Chaewon lies, "I mean, I was, but not...not doing, um, that stuff."

"Phew," Hajoon grins, wiping imaginary sweat off his forehead, "I was afraid she stole you from me for a minute. Yunny gets more girls than I do, honestly."

Chaewon slides her hands up to his shoulders, straining onto her tiptoes to close the distance between them, "Please can we not talk about Yunjin right now?"

"Yeah?" Hajoon grins, "Ready to get to know each other?"

Chaewon rolls her eyes, "Ew."

She kisses him. It isn't the sweet, front porch kind of kiss that she'd hoped to end the date with. It's clumsy and messy and bitter with the taste of beer in Hajoon's mouth. She can smell his cheap cologne mixing with the stench of sweat on his skin. Amber, maybe, and something woody, and it's while Chaewon is trying to identify each distinct note of whatever fragrance he's wearing that she realizes she's supposed to be thinking about kissing him. But if she thinks about kissing him then she starts thinking about his lips, and then she starts thinking of Yunjin's swollen lips in the bedroom upstairs, and then she starts thinking about Yunjin kissing Yena, and then she starts thinking about Yunjin kissing Yena and imagining Chaewon's lips against her own and it's all so fucked up and she kisses Hajoon harder waiting for the rest of the world to fade away the way it's supposed to when you're kissing a cute, fluffy-haired boy on the baseball team.

They're interrupted by the sound of footsteps on the stairs and Chaewon pulls away, glancing over to see Yunjin already looking at her as she comes down. Chaewon meets her eyes and pulls Hajoon into another kiss, keeping her gaze locked on Yunjin so the younger girl understands Chaewon's intentions. She wants Yunjin to say something. Wants Yunjin to get angry. Wants Yunjin to make a scene so Chaewon can make a bigger scene and lash out and scream at her until her throat gets sore. But Yunjin just mumbles an apology and hurries out, leaving Chaewon with her mouth getting attacked by a boy she's hardly spoken to all night. Still, as long as she's struggling to meet Hajoon's onslaught of tongue and teeth, she can shake away the images of Yunjin that flash behind her squeezed-shut eyelids. When Hajoon suggests that they go upstairs together, she takes his hand and lets him lead her up to one of Kazuha's many, many bedrooms.
