Their dreadlocks hang loosely around their shoulders. Inebriated from the liquor, they slowly bob their head up and down listening to some sounds by Lucky Dube.
As they stand up, slowly staggering to the bathroom, they catch a flash of their phone on the coffee table lighting up and just when they are able to get to it, it stops ringing. They open it to find over ten missed calls from Yoliswa... They blink many times and then successfully manage to call her back.
"Asi... I've been trying to reach you since evening..." She says worriedly.
"Eish... Sorry mama I didn't hear my phone ring... But I ... " They burp and Yoliswa realises that they are drunk.
"Mama..."
"Yes baby?" She smiles inspite of herself.
"I really need to pee ma... Can I call you when. When. I. Come. Back. From peeing?"
YV laughs. "okay love."
They put the phone back on the coffee table before walking to the bathroom to handle their business and coming back.
They sit down and dial YV's number again.
"Sorry about that.. I had a bit to drink. I saw you on the newspaper today... You looked so beautiful... Did you see yourself? How was your day? I missed you.... I haven't seen you in two weeks... Are you mad at me?" They ramble the liquor still heavy in their system.
Yoliswa laughs and cries all at once.
"I miss you too baby... Very much... It's why I was calling you. I wanted us to have dinner tonight..."
"Dinner? But I think I'm a bit drunk..."
"It's okay baby we can have breakfast tomorrow..."
"Are you mad at me?"
"No baby... Never. I love you."
"You love me?"
"Yes. I do. I literally loved you the first day I laid my eyes on you. And I chased after you and embarassed myself... You were the first person I ever chased after... And I've fallen more in love with you over these past months..."
She hears Asiphile sniffling.
"But you don't want to marry me... You don't want to be my wife... You don't want me to be..." They cry some more
Yoliswa's heart breaks.
"Baby... It's not because I don't love you. I am committed to you, to us. I don't need paper to prove that..."
"But... I really want us to be married... For me it's meaningful... And then people will know you are taken... You will be mine... Just mine and I ran out of tonic and the ice cubes have all melted... I'm such a mess..." They cry.
Yoliswa closes her eyes and tears slowly trail down her face.
"Baby... Please listen to me my love. Go and drink a glass of water and then get in bed and get some sleep okay?"
"But I still want to drink..."
"Please baby..."
She hears some groaning and some mumbled phrases like "vibe killer..." But she hears the tap running with water and hears them gulping down the water...
"Okay I'm in bed now... Happy?"
"Yes baby. Thank you for listening to me..."
"Okay what do I get for being so good?" Asi asks.
Yoliswa laughs. Drunk Asi is quite something.
"Ooh I know... Sing for me baby..."
"Oh and baby don't be mad okay, but I have to tell you the truth, promise you won't be mad at me okay?"
