There was one place where I needed to go before I could put any of this to rest. Somewhere where my questions could be answered.
The Smithsonian.
So here I stand, looking at a plaque dedicated to me. 'Daughter of a Hero.' There's not much on it, but it's a start.
"The cleverest girl I ever knew, but yet so clueless to the world around her." -Margaret "Peggy" Carter.
That was my mother. Someone who was so close to me, but yet I can't put the pieces together to remember all the details. It's frustrating knowing what something is, but not being able to figure out how or why. Though, I continued to read.
"Born in 1945, Blaire Carter grew up an only child with just her mother and the occasional help with the famous Howard Stark. A legacy to be carried out."
"Though, things were cut short when tragedy struck unexpectedly. November 13th, 1956. The school Carter had been attending caught ablaze. (No cause was found on how this fire started, some suspect IED.) By the time everyone had gotten out of the building, it was crumbling to the ground. Three people were reported missing, including Carter, but no bodies were ever found. Police concluded that all three who were reported missing were dead."
"Blaire Carter."
"1945-1956."
I looked at the photo next to the plaque. It was a black and white photo of me at the age of eleven by the looks of it. It was me hanging upside down off of monkey bars at a playground. I tried to recall when this photo was taken, but my mind ended up blank. Per usual.
It's weird to think of the life I could've lived had I not been kidnapped and brainwashed. Would I have been married? Had kids? Even alive by now? Those are all questions that I'll never have an answer to. Robbed of a life full of wonder to be replaced by constant fear.
