It was the silence and the warmth of Ashtons body that woke Luke. He sleepily scooted off the bed and stumbled forward in the dark, in search of the bathroom. He rubbed the back of his hand against one of his eyes as he tried not tripping through the darkness.
The only sounds that could be heard were the soft snores coming from Calum, the deep heavy breathing of sleep from Ashton, and the sound of waves gently hitting the boat.
Luke narrowed his brows in confusion, wasn't there suppose to be another sound? Wasn't there an annoying hum earlier? His mind was fuzzy with sleep.
It didn't dawn onto him till he was trying to turn the bathroom light on that it shouldn't be this quiet. Luke felt his heart speed up with fear.
"Oh shit.." He mumbled before spinning around looking back into the dark room he was just in. "Ashton!"
The panic tone in Lukes voice stirred the sleeping boy. With a groan he rolled over slapping his arm across calums face.
"Ashton!" Lukes voice was closer and louder , it even held fear in it.
Ashton quickly sat up and tried to look at Luke but it was too dark. Shouldn't there have been a night light down here?
"What?"
"The motors! They aren't making a sound!"
"What? What do you mean?" It was stupid of him to ask that, he could clearly hear that the motors weren't doing their typical annoying hum.
"Wait? What? Not working?" Calum asked as he too sat up and followed Ashton off the bed.
all three were stumbling, bumping, and tripping through the darkness with several curse words till they finally found the stairs and went up to the second level.
Michael was passed out on the couch, his head was tilted back with mouth open and a loud snore coming from him. His left leg was propped up on the back of the couch, hitting the window, and his right arm was dangling off touching the ground where his blanket was located.
Since daylight was breaking there was a faint glow throughout the lounge cabin making it easier for everyone to see.
"Calum, get the flashlight under Michael in the cabinet and go check the motors. I'm going to go check the controls." Ashton demanded, as he left the lounge and headed up the stairs.
Once he reached the controls he looked around him taking in the sight. The boat seemed to have drifted closer to the islands during the night, being the dumbass he was he forgot to put the anchor down last night.
Rolling his eyes at his own stupidity, he turned his attention to the control board infront of him. He tried turning the key to start the motors but it wouldn't budge, he then tried poking other keys.
Nothing seemed to have worked, not even a warning light was blinking. Ashton slammed his fists down on the controls in anger and cursed loudly.
After Calum slapped michaels arm out of the way he was able to find a working flashlight, so he headed back down into the darkness.
With the light as his guide he found the doors to the motors and swung them open. He stared at the machines before him, he was so confused. He had never worked on or even seen motors before in his life! What the hell was he going to do?
A green lever caught his attention, so he poked it. Calum had a habit of poking things before really doing what he should do with it. He turned it clock wise hoping it would turn something on, but he was only greeted with silence.
Calum was getting annoyed when anything he pushed, poked, pulled, turned, and even kicked didn't work. "Stupid stupid stupid" he repeated in mumbles. He started to slap his hand against the motors.
"I don't think that's going to work, cal" michaels snarky comment angered Calum, so he turned to face Michael.
Once the beam of the flashlight found Michael, Calum could see just his face peeking down from the top of the steps, a smug look on it.
"Fuck you!"
Michaels smug smile turned into a playful grin, " been there, done that. Time to move on cal" he said as he waved his hand and disappeared from calums sight.
Michael turned and spotted Luke, who was peering out the window at the oddly calm waters. A look of fear across his face.
"Luke.. It's going to be o-"
"Don't you dare! Don't you fucking dare say it's going to be okay! Because I'm not stupid and I know it won't be. We are stranded out here, miles from civilization! Oh god what are we going to do?!" Luke burried his face into his hands. "We are going to die!"
"The hell we will. I promise none of you will die, I'll make sure of that!" Ashton said when he walked in. He moved closer to Luke, wrapping his arm around the taller boys shoulders trying to comfort him.
"What ARE we going to do then? We only have enough food to last us for.. Well for breakfast since we thought we would be home for lunch. Not that it matters since nothing will work now." Calum asked when he made it back up the stairs. He was pointing at the now useless kitchen.
"We could swim to an island" Michael said, half jokingly.
"Not a bad idea Michael." Ashton said as he looked between the boys.
Michaels jaw dropped open, did Ashton just agree with his stupid idea? "What? No way! That water could be ice cold and there - there could be sharks!"
Luke started to sob into his hands when Michael said the word sharks. Could this day just get any worse?
"I'm sorry but it's the best idea, there would be fresh water, food, and maybe even shelter on an island. We are drifting pretty close to one anyways, so it wouldn't be much of a swim. let's pack what we think we would need and I'll anchor the boat here and hope someone sees it and rescues us." Ashton said when he pulled Luke into a tight hug, still trying to sooth the boy's nerves and fears.
Everyone's stomach seemed to drop and turn at ashtons words. They knew he was right but hated and feared it. Could they really survive on the island that looked so wild, dark, and eerie. Could they even swim the distance? Calum was already a bad swimmer but the cold could affect them or there could even be hungry sharks.
