No 6: The HospitalLocation: Central Africa
General Fahiti watched the world news with a baffled expression; he hissed.
"You know, Taiye I was made to believe the Falconians were intelligent people. That's what I thought growing up," the general said as he stubbed his cigarette onto the ashtray. The general was unbelievably fat. His head where there should be hair was smooth like an egg; he had small eyes that seemed to disappear into the sacs underneath them; his cheeks were puffed so it looked like he was always smiling; he had no neck (at least there was none visible to any observer); his stomach resembled a sack of rice; his skin was darker than charcoal. To the human eye he looked as though the man would be incapable of walking let alone running but General Fahiti carried himself with an agility that was both surprising and humorous to watch.
"A population act? What do they need it for? A quarter of their women have tied their wombs and many of them are in unproductive relationships so how come they are experiencing over population?" The general continued as he watched the Falconian president address his nation. He shook his head in disgust, it was obvious that the Falconian would soon expire. How had the people voted him in the first place? Were they really blind or just plain stupid? It was a pity really, to think the Falconians accused him of brain washing his citizens when in fact they did much worse.
"Sir, the prime minister is being held on line two," his secretary said.
"The bastard, what does he want this time?" the general mumbled.
"Should I tell him you are busy?" Taiye asked risking his job.
"Just connect him," the general grumbled as he waved for an attendant to lower the sound of the T.V.
"Mr. President, accept my condolences," were the first words of the prime minister. Fahiti was confused he did not remember losing anybody. Had one of his many wives died?
"Ah, thank you. What is it you want?" General Fahiti wished the prime minister would just go straight to the point.
"So it is true sir? Your son is in Falcon?" the general could imagine that his prime minister had a smirk on his face.
"What are you trying to infer?" Fahiti wanted desperately to scream into the phone but his doctor had told him his life was in danger as his blood pressure was on the high side. Until he had his heart transplant later in the month he needed to tread with caution.
"The press is enraged sir, you refuse to allow them pursue education abroad while your son frolics gay parties in Falcon. It is only fitting that he should die in a club," General Fahiti smiled. His prime minister was so naive, did he really think he could be threatened with such bullshit? This was no condolence call. His prime minister was intent on ousting him out of power.
"Patrick, I will deal with my family affairs as I see fit, you need not worry about me. My son is safe at home," the General smiled, Taiye who was in the room shivered. General Fahiti may look like he stepped out of a comic play but his voice carried an authority that put one on attention.
"How long do you intend to keep this lie?" the prime minister sounded enranged.
"I don't know what you're talking about, have a good day Patrick. And by the way I have invited the Chief Priest, Abdul to stop by and hand you a little present. Let me know when you receive it," the General said before hanging up.
General Fahiti was aware that the prime minister sought to usurp his position. He was not afraid of his empty threats. It was true that he had sent his son to study in Falcon. It was important that his heir experience the world beyond Central Africa in order to become a better leader. He knew his son was alive and that his son enjoyed being with women so the gay club thing was a lie. In fact, he had personally ensured that Fahiti jnr be thought the pleasures of the flesh by a well trained prostitute. However, if his son suddenly preferred men who was he to interfere in youthful escapades?
