Barbra wasn't sure why Carol had been acting strange for so long. Even if she didn't have chess practice that day, she was always busy. She started to dress a little differently and began to wear contacts more frequently.
Barbra found it strange because she was aware that her sister had never shown any interest in a boy. What was it, then?
She proceeded towards her sister's room after deciding to confront her about it. Her sister's hushed voice could be heard inside as she knocked on the door. Her sister's voice from inside exclaimed, "What?!" She rolled her eyes as she opened the door and then shut it again.
Carol was reading a book on her bed when she turned around. She approached the bed and sat at the end of it. "Hey, can we talk?"
Carol closed her book, set it aside, and then crossed her arms. She asked, "Yeah, what is it?" After clearing her throat, Barbara got right to the point.
"I wanted to know why you've been acting so strange lately," Barbra asked. Carol's eyes appeared to have opened wide at that moment, catching her sister's gaze, but she quickly turned her head away.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Carol hastily said.
"Are you seeing someone?" Barbra pressed her, knowing her sister was lying.
When Carol felt pressure, she snapped and leaned up, saying, "No! I'm OK, so leave me alone." Carol entered the restroom after standing up and slamming the door.
Indulging in an eyeroll She murmured, "Teenagers," and walked out.

Barbra was on the phone with a friend when she heard a faint thump upstairs. She said, "Hey, I'll call you back," and hung up. As she walked gently up the stairs, she heard another faint thump, and she realized it was coming from Carol's room.
When she snuck out, her window made the same sound, so she knew what it was when she went into her room and took a brief peek out the window.
Because her window was close to Carol's, she went into her room, looked through her window, and could clearly see Carol climbing out of her window and landing on the ground.
