Chapter 21: A Tearful goodbye

The day started off simple like all days except today it was raining which meant no outside for today. Today was Wyatt's day to make breakfast so he was downstairs making French toast while Kimberly was in Wyatt's office on video chat with the team members, conversing with ideas for the plot of Dream Detectives 2. Despite Molly and the others being her close friends, she still didn't tell them that her and Wyatt were living in the same house together, for obvious reasons which sucked because that food was smelling really good. She managed to tough it out for another 30 minutes before her stomach rumbled loudly and she ended the session for the day.

After logging out of the computer, she zipped into the kitchen so fast it scared the living daylights out of Wyatt. She grabbed her plate off the counter, darted over to the table, and began demolishing her plate just like every morning. By now she had accepted that she ate live a caveman and he accepted it as well and would now just shake his head at her and prepare her another two plates. They ate together and chatted about the story and a few other things before washing their plates together which was an improvement over Wyatt twisting her arm to do them. After breakfast, the two went out into the studio and got started on building the plot, unaware of what was about to happen.

Around lunchtime, the two stopped and took a break but Kimberly volunteered to make food. It was when she got into the house and into the kitchen that she received a phone call from her auntie. Her and her aunt talked from time to time but normally it was to check in and see how she was doing since her and her mom weren't on speaking terms. She ignored the call like she normally would until it rang 3 times then 5 and ten finally she answered it. Her auntie said, "What took you so long?" In an annoyed tone and Kimberly said" Well I am at work so what's up now". There was a pause before she said "K-kimberly, your mother's dead". Kimberly said, " Quit playing, I know this is one of her schemes and I won't forgive her not ever". Her aunt said, "Listen, she passed away peacefully in her sleep last night, it wasn't until your stepdad came in from drinking and found her breathless in bed and called us".

Her Aunt continued and said, "I'm sorry to spring this on you right now but it's the truth...we'll be holding her funeral a week from now, I would appreciate it if you could come back home and at least see her off". Kimberly said"I'll think about it" before hanging up and falling to her knees trembling. Tears began to flow down her cheeks as she began to remember the last time her and her mother talked.

[Flashback 3 years ago]
It was a dark chilly night, as Kimberly quickly hustled all of her clothes and belongings into her car. She had been accepted into college under a writing scholarship and she was trying to beat her stepdad home. Her stepdad had told her it was dumb and that she wasn't going but by now Kimberly was 22 and she had enough and was ready to break free from his control and live. As she packed the last of her items and got ready to say goodbye as her mother just stood there, arms crossed. Finally, she spoke and said, "I wish you wouldn't defy your father, you'll make it worse on yourself".

Kimberly said," How? I'm leaving to get away from him and pursue a scholarship for something I want to do and I don't intend to come back". Her mother shook her head and said he's not that bad sweetie" and Kimberly looked at her mother confused before saying "Have you seen how that man has talked to and treated me?". She said "Yes but you deserved it for not listening to him, children who don't listen tend to get scolded". Kimberly said"this is your problem, you never see the bad in him but always choose to see that bad in me...you trust him over your own child and that's sad mom".Her mother sighed and said, "you just don't understand where he's coming from...he means well for you, he just doesn't show it too well but I'm sure if you stay perhaps we can work something out".

Kimberly sighed and said" You know I can't do that mom, I have to live my life and stop living in his shadow. You can't see it but he's hurt me pretty bad and I'm scarred but not once did you seem to care or try to stop him but you know what, it's ok, I'm stronger and I'm finally leaving".I love you and thank you for giving me life and a decent life before that asshole came but this is goodbye for a while".Her mother said, "If you're that bent on starting new then leave, and once you walk out that door, don't ever bother coming back". I don't want your stepfather worrying his heart out over someone ungrateful like you". Kimberly frowned at her mother and said, "Very well, then this is goodbye forever Mother".

Kimberly walked out the door, feeling slightly disheartened while also determined. She was going to make something of her life and show those two just how wrong they are, she was going to show them all".
