Chapter 17
Horrors of the Abyss
The corpse gently released Skadi's hand, his firm fingers loosening their grip. Slowly and cautiously, she withdrew from the corpse's unsettling grasp. Her eyes remained fixed on the macabre figure before her, her heart pounding in her chest.
As she moved away, underneath his mask the corpse's hollow gaze followed her, and his lifeless eyes slowly and steadily seemed to returning to its life, he eyed on the wound she had sustained. A faint smile curled on the corners of his dry lips, revealing a hint of mirth in his spectral presence.
He leaned closer to Skadi, his voice echoing with an eerie, almost mocking tone. "Curious, pretty lady, aren't you?" The words were spoken with a sinister elegance that sent shivers down her spine. "Oh, I know how the secrets beckon so sweetly."
Skadi's breaths quickened as she watched the corpse stand up, his tattered white attire slowly repairs itself, concealing the gruesome wound that had earlier separated half of his left shoulder. Yet now, to her astonishment, it was slowly healing and reattaching itself, as if being sewn together by the very blood that had pooled on the ground.
The chilling realization swept over her. From her experience, she can tell that this was no ordinary corpse. It possessed an unnatural vitality that defied the boundaries of life and death.
The corpse's regenerating senses detected the distinct scent of Skadi's blood, tainted by the essence of the creatures that had attacked him earlier. With a pitiful tone, he addressed her, expressing his empathy for her plight. "I pity you," he murmured, his voice laden with sorrow. "You reek of one of those creatures, another victim of the ocean... beyond any form of help."
A cold shiver ran down Skadi's spine as she listened to the haunting words. The sense of foreboding in the air grew thicker with each passing moment. The corpse's gloved fingers tightened around his cane, and in a swift, fluid motion, he transformed it into a whip adorned with numerous gleaming blades.
The whip cracked through the air, the eerie sound reverberating within the dark confines of the clocktower. With an air of finality, the corpse spoke once more, his voice carrying a weighty solemnity. "Only a honest death shall save you now," he declared, his now fierce eyes locking onto hers. "I shall liberate you from the scourge that is soon to consume you."
Their battle then unfolds within the dimly lit confines of the clocktower, a dance of life and death set to a haunting rhythm. Skadi, her heart heavy with dread and determination, wielded her reinforced case with precision, using it both as a shield to fend off the corpse's relentless attacks and as a weapon to strike back.
