Ever since Maya had a breakdown following her demotion in rank, she had become lost in a sea of frustration, excessive workouts, and endless shifts at work, which eventually pushed her further away from Carina. Often, Carina found herself alone in the apartment, waiting for Maya to show up, but the firefighter buried herself deeper into her work in her quest to regain her position as captain. As a result, their marriage was sinking deeper into turmoil, and Carina found herself fighting for their relationship on her own.

Maya treated Carina with hostility and avoided meeting the doctor at all costs. Most of the time, she would head home when she knew her wife was on duty. She refused to accept that she needed professional help, and this had been a source of arguments and disagreements between them.

Before everything fell apart, Maya and Carina had been trying to conceive, or rather, Carina had been. However, given the crisis in their marriage, Carina thought it best not to continue, as she didn't know what would become of their relationship.

After spending three consecutive days at the fire station, Maya was forced to return home, following orders from Captain Becket. The firefighter reluctantly agreed and headed home.

Upon arriving home, she found Carina, who had swapped her night shift because one of her patients had not yet gone into labor, and she decided to come home to take a shower and rest.

— Finally, you're home... — Carina said as soon as she saw Maya enter the bedroom. The Italian was coming out of the shower when she saw the firefighter enter the room.

— Seriously? Are you starting already, Carina? — Maya asked impatiently.

— Yes, Maya! It's been three days since you've been home. I've slept here alone all these days... — Carina was at her wit's end with Maya's recent behavior, always being pushed away by the firefighter.

— I was working, Carina — Maya tried to argue.

— No, Maya, you were running away and pushing me away so we couldn't talk.

— Okay... I'm home now... I'm tired, I want to sleep, but since you want to talk, let's talk — Maya said, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Carina closed her eyes, took a deep breath, went to Maya, and held her hands.

Bambina, I don't want to fight... I miss you so much. I don't want you to push me away. We made a commitment in front of our friends that we'd be there for each other in good times and bad. I want you to let me help you.

— Carina, I'm fine!

— No, bella, you're not.

— I'm dealing with this my way. Please, could you be by my side?

— Yes, I could be by your side, but you keep pushing me away, you don't talk to me, you close yourself off in your own world, and you leave me out. So how can I help you? How can I be by your side if you don't let me?"

— Carina, I'm fighting for my job, to get my position back.

— No, Maya, what you did to get your position back was blackmail. You threatened Chief Ross to get your job back. Do you really think you can succeed that way?

— I was trying to get my position back, for us, for our family — Maya raised her voice.

— Don't drag me into your mess. You did it for yourself.

— I want my position back, is that a crime?

— No, it's not. But blackmail is, especially against the head of the SFD. And I'm not just talking about your behavior to get your job back; I'm also talking about the chaos you're creating. Everything around you is collapsing, and you believe you're in control of things, Maya. We were happy, but you're turning everything into chaos, including our marriage, and I can't live with that.

— Yes, with you, like this — Carina could no longer hold back her tears. — You need to seek help, Maya, because the way you are right now, I don't know if we can survive.

— I'm not going to seek help because I don't need to, Carina. I've already told you I'm fine; I just want you to give me space, just like I gave you when your brother died.

Carina smirked ironically at Maya's comment.

— Seriously, Maya, are you going down this path? Are you really trying to compare Andrea's death to all of this? You're simply unbelievable. Okay... you want space, Maya? I'll give you space.

Carina went to the closet, grabbed a suitcase, and started throwing clothes into it haphazardly.

— What are you doing? — Maya asked, and Carina didn't respond.

— Are you really leaving? — Maya asked. — If you leave, we're done, Carina, do you hear me?

— I've already lost you anyway, bella — Carina replied as tears streamed down her face.

Carina packed only the essentials in the suitcase, put on the first outfit she found, slipped on her sneakers, and left the room, pulling the suitcase. On the table near the door, she grabbed her keys, removed her wedding ring, placed it on the same surface, and walked out. Maya just watched as her wife left. As soon as Carina slammed the door, Maya knelt on the floor and began to cry.
