Number one is clear. He's the number one dude who I'd throw out a window just because I can.
Number one is obviously Chase. Like who else did you think would show up? Skye?
Nah.
She may be a boss bitch, but Chase is the biggest bitch around.
I can see people in the comments screaming at me and reporting me for hating this guy. Or hating on me for even talking about this guy.
But I just can't stand Chase. Especially not PTSD movie Chase. And I know that's insensitive, but I just can't like a guy who the moment he's told to take rest immediately lashes out at someone who was only trying to help him.
Good job, Chase. You sure showed Ryder why you shouldn't be in that fucking mission you prick. Hope you're happy with your hubris you "heroic" buffoon. Gotta get all the glory, am I right?
And I know it's a flaw of his, but it was the most annoying flaw in the movie that I felt could've been built up more.
"Take a rest. You look like you need it."
"whY aRE you GIVing up on mE?"
Bruh. BRUH! You were given at least one or two chances and you have proven that you couldn't handle it. Calm down!
Disregarding annoying movie Chase because he's annoying movie Chase, there are more reasons why I just dislike Chase.
First of all, he represents some form of toxic masculinity whether intentional or not. The strong resilient leader who everyone can depend on. Noble. But that's also kind of toxic in a way. Not that being strong and resilient aren't a naturally bad thing. It's just the way it can come off feeling like they're forcing him to be this strong pup who has no emotion and that's just not true.
While yeah he's also shown his emotion—Jesus Christ stop the overreaction movie replay mind, it still feels like he can sometimes be overly emotionless. Like he's trying so hard to get girls to like him that he forgets who he is: a pup who's on a mission to help others.
And let's go back to movie Chase.
Errr...movie Chase is definitely flawed. He isn't exactly as heroic as he's portrayed in the movie. He doesn't rescue people when they need him the most, he completely avoids rescuing people when it comes to Ryder, and he even gives up because he failed. Like he only just failed and just immediately gave up and acted like Luke Skywalker.
And I get that he's still technically a kid...or teenish, but shoot dang this pup is so entitled. Like he can't let anyone else take the glory without crying wolf. Like, calm down, Buddy. You're not getting replaced.
This pup knew Ryder for years and yet he has the audacity to complain when Ryder is showing him his care? Fuck you. Just fuck you.
Also, this doesn't feel like how Chase should be reacting. I'm surprised he didn't just fall into his expected masculinity more and try to do anything in his power to keep Ryder and Pups from realizing he, too, has emotions and that he's trying to suppress them. I feel like this would've been a better way to deal with Chase's PTSD and the idea of Chase running away from his problems doesn't feel as in character as suppressing his emotions and keeping in how he felt.
Movie Chase goes against the original Chase's personality and I think addressing the dark themes of male expectations would've been a good thing to handle. Especially since Barbie did it already. It might be hard to do, but I think they could do something like this since Chase feels like a stereotypical expected emotionless character.
Moving on from Movie Chase now I would just like to address something that feels cliche: Chase's design.
Now in regards to Chase's design I feel like it's stereotypical for a German Shepard to be a police dog. Sure he's right for the task, but imagine what would happen if Rubble or Skye had that role. That would be interesting and unique. And I get color scheme matching is fun and all, however, I just feel like his design and such is a little lazy. His and Marshall's designs just feel lazy to me. It's like they plastered everything they knew about police and firefighters and put it in the most expected breed for that role. I find that annoying to see and would rather see some originality in Chase's design.
Also, I can't tell you how many characters are stoic like Chase and don't really react much. Like I look at Chase and think of Kamado from Legends Arceus: this big buff strong guy who has to tough it out because he's a man and a leader. I hate this stereotype. It feels like it degrades men and portrays them in a way that says "If you're not this then you're not a real man" and I hate it. And that's why I don't really like Chase as much as I could.
While yes he does have emotions—literally half of romance does this cliche already of this guy who is stoic and gets emotional around girls, it just feels like Chase is meant to represent what the world wants men to be like and I can't just ignore something like that.
While yeah there's beauty to Chase's personality, it still feels like it could've been doing better or been explored to a bigger degree than it was. You know how cool it would be if he expressed why he pretends he doesn't care about Skye like the way he does or why he tries to push off his emotions?
And yet they still keep him the same old same old without much exploration and I feel that's a wasted thing right there.
Being realistic: Chase has wasted potential that could make him better than he already is. But yet they don't bring those into light.
Then again this is the same company that decided Skye needed to be more of a feminist icon rather than just a strong female character who can hold her own while also needing help.
Regardless, Chase is number one for my most hated, but hey at least he doesn't say "oh yes." for no reason. Hey there's always worse characters out there!
At least Chase deserves better for who he is. I'll admit that at least.
