Two Sweet Teeth

I hit the sweet shop at the corner of the street again. For a few weeks, I was staying at this so-called 'Haunted Hotel' that my friend said she called it. The Hotel Cortez didn't seem so haunted at all. The staff and other guests were lovely to me, and I gave them different sweets depending on what they liked.

Once, I walked past this lovely couple, I offered them both two small lolly pops. I recognized one as the barmaid for the hotel's bar, but her partner slipped my mind. Either way, they were happy with what I had given them, and I walked up the stairs, making my way into the labyrinth-like corridors of The Cortez.

The corridors were twisty, and turny, and it almost scared me. For comfort, I dipped my hand into my bag of sweet tricks and pulled out the last sucker. Perfect, a watermelon sour pop. That'll distract me long enough to let me find James' room so I can talk to him. The sourness just hit every corner of my mouth, but it was excellent, and a good distraction until a tall, handsome-looking man came up to me.

"Oh, excuse me. Do you know where room..64 is?" I asked him, holding out a pack of Smarties (the UK ones) He smiled and nodded. His smile had something about him, and he took the sweets out of my hand.

"Yes I do, I just left, come with me." The man turned back around on his heel, and I followed him quickly. He walked with such a hasten, it was hard to keep up with him, but I jogged and we ended up at the door of room 64. "Here we are. Have fun."

I looked confused at him and just knocked on the door, still holding the bag of sweets. In a matter of seconds, James opened the door and smiled widely at me. He dragged me in, and I staggered into the room once he let my arm go. The room had this odd energy about it, and I couldn't place it, but I just carried on sucking on the lolly pop, distracted by the sour flavour disappearing.

James noticed the bag, and took it out of my hand, turning it upside down and letting the contents fall onto the bed. My phone, keys, wallet, and sweets were in there. Mainly sweets. He stared at the bag's contents for what seemed like hours. "My darling. What's this?" I made a face and turned around. "Dear?" A little squeak made its way out of my mouth and I just turned red.

James raised an eyebrow at me, "I went to the sweet shop..." I admitted sheepishly. I told James a few days ago I wouldn't buy any more until he permitted me. But I saw some new sweets I hadn't seen before. Just like the Smarties. Lots of British sweets, and spicy ones from countries like Mexico. All of them interested me, and they were covering a quarter of the bed since they were all sprawled out. He kept his eyebrows raised as his eyes examined the different types of candies on the bed.

"My dear I question how you are not dead from these sweets."

"I'm still healthy! I brush my teeth, I have a good diet, I exercise!" I haven't exercised much, but I hoped the little white lie would help me.

"Is that enough though my sweet bird?" James walked towards me since I was leaning against a wall. Confidently, I nodded. He took my hands and pressed me more into the wall. "Dear, I am concerned for your well-being, I want you to not eat so many sweet treats. I won't stop you fully, but please do not eat so many."

I stayed quiet and nodded, looking down at our feet. Slowly though, as James kept talking and holding me. Oh fuck. I knew what was coming, and what I was feeling, so inside I was freaking out and just put my hand on James' shoulder tightly. "James..." Quietly left my mouth, and he stopped, looking down at me before lifting me and placing me on a free part of the bed.

A few minutes later, I woke up with a blanket over me, and everything was cleaned up. Confused, I looked around and then saw James enter the room with a glass of water in his hand. "Oh, my darling! I was so worried my bird." He rushed to my side and put the glass of water on the bedside table. James immediately picked me and the blanket up, putting me on his lap. I just blushed, and slightly giggled, placing my arms around his neck. "I told you it would catch up to you soon." He kissed me everywhere and I felt out of breath, kissing him back. Every time I kissed James, there was something about it that I couldn't place. It was so much better than sweets.

"What even happened?" I asked shyly, thinking the answer was right.

"dehydration my darling hummingbird. You've had one too many sweets and not enough water."

"coffee has water in it." (👁️) James shot me a deadpan look, almost annoyed at me for saying that. "...okay fine I'll learn to drink more water."

"No energy drinks either. Those 'Monster' drinks do not seem to be helping you."

"FUCK." He chuckled at my response and brought me down so I was lying on his chest. I could feel his not-beating heart where I placed my head. It was still a weird feeling, not hearing a heartbeat beneath you, but it was okay. James was a gentleman and helped me. Being in his arms was so much better than the serotonin sweets gave me. His scent stayed in my nose, and I sighed, moving myself around a bit, so I was comfortable. "I feel ill darling..." I mentioned, digging my face into the crook of James' head.

Immediately though, James held me up, and put the blanket around me again, since it fell. "Do you need some more water, my dear? I can ask someone to get you some medication, or to cook something for you."

I just nodded and then reached for my bag nonchalantly. James noticed and slapped my hand lightly. "Ow...I was going to get my phone and text, Sally.." James just silently said 'Oh. Sorry.' And let me text Sally.

10 or so minutes passed, and a knock on the door came. James rushed up and opened the door. "Sally. Thank you." She held out the tray which had some chicken noodle soup, with a hot cup of tea next to it and a packet of paracetamols.

"What the fuck did you do, to need all this?" She questioned, lighting a new cig. I pointed to my black, plastic bag and she walked into the room, digging around in the bag soon after. "That's way too many sweets for one person to consume in a lifetime Y/N."

"yeah, I know. I'll try to only have one of them a day to stop myself." I weakly smiled, having some of the soup. Sally just huffed some of her air from the gig and walked out, closing the door behind her.

"Darling give me the spoon."

"I'm not that weak, I just fainted is all." James took the spoon out of my hand anyway, trying to feed me the soup. I gladly accepted it, since it was nice being like this, but I did feel a bit embarrassed since fainting was rare for me. "Hey, wanna know something funny?" I asked through a bite of the bland chicken.

"of course my darling, you have the funniest jokes."

"I have two sweet teeth. One for sweets, one for you."

"Let's make sure the one for me is bigger hm?" James smiled, pressing a kiss to my cheek. "I love you Y/N, you truly are so wonderful."

"I love you too James, thank you for helping me."
