Tommy wasn't the most fortunate in life when growing up. He was swapped around from home to home, dealing with abusive parents and snotty "siblings."
Until he arrived at the Watsons.
They welcomed him with open arms and didn't care about all the flaws he had. They didn't try to fix him or change who he was.
It was rough initially, but then Tommy started trusting them, and his cold heart finally started warming. They broke down every wall he had built up with delicacy and care. The Watsons treated Tommy as if he was actually a person.
They even dedicated every Friday night to watching movies; it was labeled as "Family Night" by Wilbur.
Wilbur was an interesting character, that's for sure. He was gifted with many talents that Tommy was envious of. Talents like playing guitar and singing, and boy, could Wilbur hold a note.
Tommy distinctly remembers that before he trusted anyone, in the dead of night, Wilbur would softly play his guitar, and Tommy would listen intently to him while sitting on the floor and pressing an ear to the wall, which led to a countless number of nights he would fall asleep to the lovely sound in an uncomfortable position. And even if he woke up with a sore neck and an aching back, he would keep doing it just to hear his playing again.
Tommy also remembers the time Wilbur caught him listening to his playing.
It was half past midnight when Tommy crept to the older boy's room. He was lying against the wall near the door while listening to the sweet melody. He nearly almost fell asleep to the soft tune.
As Tommy's eyes began to fall, he didn't even realize that the guitar had fully stopped. That was until the door to Wilbur's room swung open, scaring the shit out of Tommy in the process. Wilbur was just standing there, looking down at him with a smug but fond smile. Wilbur invited him in, and ever since then, Tommy has had the luxury of sitting by the brown-haired boy while he plays his favorite songs, and Tommy knows he would sit there for hours.
At first, Techno was very intimidating, and Tommy was scared to death of him until he realized that the pink-haired boy was a total nerd. And, of course, at first, Tommy didn't trust Techno as far as he could throw him, and Tommy had strong arms. He swears by it.
They used to avoid each other as much as they could. If Tommy entered the kitchen, Techno would leave. When Techno was walking down the hallway, Tommy would duck into a nearby room. They continued this pattern for a couple of weeks until Tommy got fed up with it.
On a particular day, Tommy woke up irritated; he was itching for a fight. The moment Tommy entered the living room and Techno tried to leave by walking up the stairs, it gave Tommy a reason to start one. Tommy initiated it by yelling at the pink-haired boy, which shocked Techno so badly that he had to step back.
Tommy angrily spat things like, "Oh! Of course, he leaves just as I walk into the room! Why am I not surprised!" and "I bet you wish I never came here so you could return to your stupid happy life!" Tommy nearly left the argument with satisfaction after spewing a few curses out at the other.
That was until Techno took a step forward and started arguing back.
The fighting continued for a while until Techno said something that shook Tommy to his core.
"I don't ever want you to leave, Tommy! Even if I don't act like it, even if you don't want it! I care about you!"
Now Tommy stays outside until dusk with Techno as they take care of the garden and plant new seeds.
Tommy especially didn't trust Phil at first. No parent that happy or nice could actually exist. However, Phil never tried to push Tommy into loving him. He never tried to make Tommy feel grateful for taking him in. He never asked for thanks or expected anything back. All he did was love Tommy.
