"Detention, Mr. Black!" Professor McGonagall snapped. "Hey, what about me?" James called. Professor McGonagall sighed. "Believe it or not, Mr. Potter, you have done nothing to upset me...yet."
Sirius yawned, still tired from the night before. "Does it have to be tonight, Professor?" He asked, kicking his feet up on the desk.
"Yes, Mr. Black, and might I advise you to stop throwing parties at night and sleep." Professor McGonagall snapped.
"But Professor, you'll be breaking the tradition!" James whined. Professor McGonagall threw the papers she was holding in the air. "You two boys will be the reason I retire!"
James got out of his seat and bowed. "We love you too."
"Sit down, Potter!" She snapped.
James sighed and slid into his seat, making as much noise as possible as he went. "How did you get detention? All you did was smirk. I'm putting on a show." He whispered as he sat down
Sirius shot James an exhausted grin. "I'm just special like that." He said. James rolled his eyes. "Yeah, you're a special kind of annoying."
"Mr. Potter, Mr. Black, please stop babbling before I am forced to give you both double detention!" Professor McGonagall snapped.
James raised his eyebrows. "But, Professor, I can't have double detention without a single detention!"
"FINE! YOU TWO MAY HAVE DETENTION TOGETHER, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU SO DEARLY WISH!" Professor McGonagall snapped.
James lifted his hand to his mouth so nobody but Sirius could see his smirk.

"What are you looking at, Peter?" Sirius asked, watching the plump boy trip on the stairs for the third time, his eyes unfocused.
"What? Oh, nothing, Padfoot." Peter hastily replied, avoiding Sirius's eye.
James poked Peter's shoulder. "Oh you're looking at something," he said, his voice low, "and I know exactly what."
Sirius followed James's gaze to a short girl, walking alongside her friends. She had short brown hair and glasses.
"Betty Fey, huh?" James continued, grinning.
Peter laughed awkwardly. "W-what?The Ravenclaw? P-please!" He stammered.
Sirius started to laugh, suddenly excited to share this news with Remus.
Remus had been given the day off from classes, partly due to his pale skin and ragged look. Mostly, at least this is what Sirius, James, and Peter assumed, he had been given the day off because of Dumbledore's understanding. There was a reason the Whomping Willow was there, after all. It wasn't just for show. Dumbledore knew very well that Remus had his furry little problem.
"Don't laugh!" Peter squeaked, his cheeks flushing red. "She's really, quite pretty, mate." James sighed after he had finished laughing. "But he's certainly no Lily Evans."
"Oh, of course not!" Sirius began with a smirk. "Because, who could possibly compare to that shining red hair! She's so beautiful, I could...I could..."
Sirius pretended to faint against the wall, putting on the usual show. "Stop it!" James snapped. Sirius slid down and sat on the steps. "I can't believe that anyone would dare say someone is prettier than Lily Evans!"
"Sirius?" A voice squeaked behind the group of boys. With a confused look, James and Peter stepped apart to reveal a small girl, maybe a second or third year, with shoulder-length light brown hair.
"Are you okay?" She asked, hurrying over. "Oh, I'm fine." Sirius said, brushing off the girl as she clambered over to him.
"No, you were falling down! Are you dizzy? Oxygen deprived? I'd be happy to give you CPR, after all!"
"No, I'm okay, really." Sirius muttered, climbing to his feet.
"Oh," the girl seemed to droop with disappointment. "Well, bye."
The three boys watched her walk away. "That was...odd." Sirius muttered. "Ah, she just wanted an excuse to put her mouth on yours, Padfoot." James said airily. "As you would enjoy doing to Evans, Prongs." Sirius retorted, brushing himself off.

"At this point I'm not really sure what to do with you boys," Professor McGonagall said that night in detention. "Yeah, we do have a record." James announced proudly.
"Yes, you should be proud that you'll be able to say you had at least four detentions weekly!" She said sarcastically.
"Hey," James opened his arms and kicked his feet up on the desk. "That's just what we do."
Sirius yawned. Professor McGonagall glanced at him. "You seem quiet today, Mr. Black. Are you sick?" Her voice showed general concern.
"Who me?" Sirius asked through another yawn. "No, of course not. I'm just tired."
"Black, what could you have possibly been doing last night that would make you so tired?"
Sirius yawned again, starting to get slightly annoyed with himself. They had done this for a while now, it was odd that he would be so tired. He should be used to this.
Professor McGonagall sighed and shook her head. "I suppose you two will not enjoy being bored, so for the time being, you will read." She declared, ducking behind her desk and picking up two large books. She dropped one in front of James and one in front of Sirius.
The books blew dust into the boys' faces and made an unnaturally loud thump as they landed. "You expect us to finish the entire bloody thing?" James asked in disbelief. "No, Mr. Potter." Professor McGonagall hissed, exasperated. "You will read for the next two hours, then you will return to your dormitory and get some sleep."
She paused, looking at Sirius. "It seems as though Mr. Black could use some, after all."
Sirius yawned again at these words. Professor McGonagall walked over to her desk and sat down, picking up a book of her own and beginning to read. When there was no sound of rustling pages, she looked up and checked the clock. "You two better start now. You will read for two hours, no matter how sleep deprived you may be."
Sirius and James sighed, then they both opened their books and began to read, though they weren't taking anything in.
After a while, Sirius spoke, his voice low. "I wish I wouldn't have gotten detention tonight."
James went rigid. Sirius froze too. "Hey listen man," he began uneasily, "I'm tired. This would be much more enjoyable if I was wide awake."
"WHERE DID YOU PUT MY BEST FRIEND!?" James yelped. Sirius jumped a foot in the air and Professor McGonagall's book tumbled to the floor. "BE QUIET YOU TWO!" She snapped.
The two boys fell silent. There was an awkward pause, and then McGonagall spoke again, more gently this time. "Go to bed, both of you." She said. "That's enough for tonight."
Sirius leapt to his feet and walked out quickly, not bothering to wait for James. They would see each other in the dormitory tomorrow anyway. At this point, he just wanted to sleep.
